Yep looks exactly like that, but it had one big exhaust.

Now thats a very close match to the sketch he has provided.

Cant we work out this crafts possible destination? There are bound to be plenty of aircraft spotters in the area who might be able to shed some light on this.Im dying to find out what it was.

My thought was the Valkyrie, but they don't fly anymore.

Neither do these

Concordski - TU144

BUT

What about a Saab Viggen, double delta wing with single angine and afterburner

It looked very much like the first picture you gave but you said they dont fly anymore?

The first thing my dad said when he saw it was " Its concord!"
But then we looked closer and it was too slow to be concord and too low.

Not the same plane but military are involved.

Hmm other people in the area are hearing planes but not seeing them and your seeing planes but not hearing them.. the mystery deepens.

Wind can cause that. Especially if it's at a higher speed up near the aircraft. Nothing fancy, it just shifts the noise to one side a bit.

That would have been my first thought to but the OP claims it was following a propeller driven aircraft which could be heard.

That would seem the most logical explanation to me, that one craft was very small so it made the other look very much larger than it actually was. Still, a Typhoon or any other known jet should still make quite a racket, and would stall at low speed anyways.

Perhaps it was a large airship like the ones that Boeing has been experimenting with here in the US.

Could it have been any of these objects:
