I don't understand how the US government and military can't understand that they can't occupy these middle eastern countries forever.

There are two possibilities.

The first is that they really think they can do it. That if they try harder and spend more money, they they can turn the tide of public support towards the western thought, which is UNLIKELY.

The second is that they want to destroy these countries' economies to make it easy for multinational corporations to come in and "turn their economies around.'
