Weird New Ghostshark

September 22, 2009—California has a new star, the Eastern Pacific black ghostshark.

But the newly identified species prefers to stay out of the sun—and the spotlight. And with a club-like sex organ on its forehead, the male ghostshark isn't likely to get any leading man roles.

Either that or self consciousness would disappear very quickly.

And yes it would be nice to see more intrest in ocean exploration. Gotta give the oil companies a hand (stranger things can happen-lol) for handing over their deep sea exploration videos to researchers.

The facial region looks sort of like a cookie cutter shark, Isistius brasiliensis.

The new guy is Hydrolagus melanophasma. It is a chimaeroid. Genus Hydrolagus. So it's not really a shark by definition. Weird, they look sort of similar.

The new guy looks similar but has more fins and a more fish-like appearance. The jaws are similar.

Its a unicorn shark...well at least during mating season

they look so photogenic as if they're smiling for the camera (heeheehee)

Is this the shark you guys are talking about? It's a ghost shark just not sure if it is the new species.



Doesn't seem to look anything like the Australian (ugly mo fo) ghost shark, even though it has the cookie cutter jaws..

Horrid looking Creatures aren't they? Of course not as horrid as the already mentioned cookie cutter shark.
