Two new cases of dengue fever in the U.S.

Topic started on 24-9-2009 @ 04:16 PM by Uphill

In the last week, 2 new cases of dengue fever have been identified in Key West, Florida. Here is the news report on that story:

Earlier this month, I posted a thread in the Medical Forum on the new dengue outbreaks. Here is the link to that discussion, which was later moved to the Science and Technology forum:

It's important to keep in mind that in order to catch the lethal form of dengue (the "hemorrhagic fever" variant), you must be unlucky enough to be bitten by both of the mosquito species which carry the 2 different forms of dengue. Both of these mosquito species continue to increase their range across North America, so the incidence of both the nonlethal and lethal forms of dengue fever will continue to grow.

Edit at 3:30pm PDT: Here is another story; this one is about the receipt of NIH grant monies for research teams in Ft. Collins, CO to work with a Wisconsin team on developing a vaccine against dengue fever:

Thanks for the info. Ive been keeping an eye on this since your last thread on the subject. Airborne vectors are scary as hell even if the disease is treatable.
