They could have just simply done a Satellite Scan rather than a UAV pass, at least that way there wouldn't be millions of dollars lost in a attempt to see what there doing, only for Iran to bring the recon flights down aswell as giving them technological secrets.

Yes but don't they fly UAVs when a satellite cannot confirm something they need to know. Example a sat sees something suspicious and they send UAVs to photograph the area actually they send pictures back in real time.

On another point why wouldnt a UAV self distruct if its shoot down?

"Shiny Metallic Object" seems like an odd description for an aircraft?

I cant think of a single military craft that is 'shiny and metallic'. I figure they are all painted one way or another, especially anything working over water (good ol corrosion). So... that leaves: a) a specially done up drone to MAKE Iran shoot it down , although no one's claiming the thing, wayward mylar balloons sent up either as a prank, as propaganda, or someone lost them, or a REALLY novel way to test Iran's defenses without sending up an airplane or drone, Or aliens. *insert 50's flying saucer noise here*

Maybe they are all a little panicky over there and are accidentally shooting down their own aircraft...

I mean it not unheard for state of the art superpowers to, errrm shoot down the occasional friendly (yes America I am looking in your direction ).

And the Iranian missile defence guys are kinda set up to work totally independently of the chain of command - should that chain be broken.

hmm, maybe they're some kind of probes; who knows, maybe other countries regularly hunt down simple alien reconnaissance but keep it hushed up
