Try living in Brisbane.

We've had several days in the low - mid 30's and even a 33c day in winter.
It feels exacly like summer in spring. I think we've had the hottest temps for this time of year in recorded history.

I have lived in Brisbane....all you Brisbanites whinge to much

Try living in Kunnurra in north west WA where its 42 degrees with 90% humidity

Or even Mardie in north west WA, where they had 92 days consecutive of temperatures of 38 degrees C. That I believe is the Australian record

Would it really be classified as a cyclone?

I was exagerating, lol

We are about 5kph too low for it to be classified as a tropical cyclone...in Australian terms. The hurricanes in the USA are stronger than our cyclones. There cat 1 hurricane is equivalent to our cat 3 cyclone. The typhoons in the pacific that hit China, Taiwan etc are even stronger than the US's hurricanes!!!

That all looks pretty scary (even though it's upside down). The massive low with another smaller one nearby and that front off to the west. It's all boxed in by the two highs. Are the dotted lines projections? Is there any chance that the lows and front could converge? I've seen that happen in a tropic setting, it can get really nasty for days on end.
[edit on 9/22/2009 by Phage]

The dotted lines are actually troughs associated with the low pressure system. Its unusual to see one extending that far north. If it persists it could possibly turn into its own system and bring stormy weather to Queensland later....not guranteed, the Queensland mets can deal with that one.

I agree with Ozweatherman. Brisbane & SE Qld is so tame. A couple of severs storms, the occassional east coast low and the odd cyclone activity is as bad as we get, but that's nothing compared with many areas of Oz.

Thankyou Ozweatherman, for updating us AND saving the rabbit.

Damaging Storms Moving Across Australia

Dust blankets ACT and NSW

The weather system itself is what in Britain would be deemed a pretty unremarkable Atlantic depression (you Aussies do get so excited over a little bit of wind and rain
) - the dust storms are a legacy of the on-going drought.

Meanwhile I see Perth has broken the record for the longest spell of wet weather in September. Whilst the overnight minimum temp at Alice Springs on Sunday night was 27.9c - which is nearly 2c higher than the previous record for September.

And here in England the most exciting weather event in weeks has been a colourful sunset - which I missed

i shudder when i look at those dernned southern hemisphere charts... lol i keep wanting the lows to go counter clockwise and your cold fronts are all upside down!! lol

but yeah, looks like one heck of a pressure gradient there.

on the by, you guys are going into summer, perhaps this is why you are seeing the northern progression of the systems? seems that things should start moving equatorward as we get into this transition season.

great stuff!

SOHO is down for 2 weeks so we cannot tell if there is some solar activity causing this, 2 weeks SMH. I check out the SUN when we have bad weather just to see if there is any relation.

Here in Sydney we awoke to blood red skies this morning. There is choking dust everywhere. I live in the heart of the city and I can hear the sirens of emergency vehicles everywhere. Sydney Airport is closed and the Harbour Ferries have stopped running. Sydney Council workers have been called off the job and sent home.

There is a health alert for asthmatics and such with the warning to stay indoors.

I believe the Central Coast and Newcastle are affected also and probably South coast too although I haven't heard reports from there.

It's all very weird and in my 50 years of living here I have never seen anything like this. You can taste the dust constantly and can't escape it.

Just found this relevant link www.smh.com.au...

That's crazy, you really wouldn't want to be breathing that stuff in for too long.

I remember maybe a couple of years ago when the Sydney fires were really bad, the smoke was carried in the wind all the way to New Zealand and we could see it from Christchurch.

In addition, check out the sun today...

The haze and light filtering has caused it to turn a shade of blue!
