Cool!

Would that type of fighter be used in Jungle warfare?

that's S-37 Berkut. and it's a technology demonstrator, not going into production, it's very cool tho

I have read that the Su-37 was going in mass production.

Where did I read that ?

Hey Raven!

I dont know if the new Russian fighters can outfly the newest American or European fighters, although I am very impressed with Russian advances in aircraft design.

I have to say, there is a VERY good chance that this already obsolete though, compared to other classified aircraft already in the inventory.... Aircraft we probably wont see, except as a UFO, unless a true national emergency does arise (then they will have a fun time explaining where this technology came from...)

Sidenote: Nans, can you explain why France was part of the EuroFighter 2000 project with the UK and Germany, and then backed out, causing the collapse of the whole project, and a year later Dessault/AeroSpacial comes out with the Rafale, which, surprise surprise, looks EXACTLY like the EuroFighter 2000, with much the same technology?????

no no no UP, i meant the S-37 (forward swept wing) was a technology demonstrator

the Su-37 is indeed going into production

QUOTE:

The Sukhoi Design Bureau of Moscow, Russia has developed the Su-47 (previously called the S-37 Berkut or Golden Eagle) fighter aircraft, which first flew in September 1997.
Su-47 is in a forward swept wing configuration and uses a highly unstable triplane (with three main lifting surfaces) aerodynamic configuration.
The Su-47 completed the first stage of flight trials in December 2001.
In May 2002, Sukhoi was selected as prime contractor for the next-generation Russian PAK FA fighter programme.
The PAK FA will be a development of the Su-47 but without the forward swept wings.

I had a game (NGEN RACING, INFOGRAMME PSX) were there was S-37 BERKUT and A USA X plane Surnamed MANTA RAY, with inverted wings. But I dont remember the number...

HEU... EF2000 and RAFALE are very differents planes :
RAFALE is specialised in AIR-CARRIER take off
EF2000 is bigger than RAFALE and TECHNOLOGIES AND
AVIONICS are more advanced on EF2000
And to me, DASSAULT and EADS are the same...

RAFALE technologies are consider a little bit passed (Rafale devellopements are from 70's >> early 80's).
EF2000 is really a XXI century AIRCRAFT.

On the forum (russia forum) I found video of the
su-37/A, they say that USAF is develloping another JSF because F/A 22 is too under performances of SU-37/4...
I lived for 20 years at lss than 1 mile from LE-BOURGET airport (PARIS AIRSHOW) and I saw many aircraft demonstration (even the one when a su-30 crashed)...
The video from su-37/4 really impressed me... But russian pilots are BURNING-HEADS...

Ok well first off the Su-37 is a formidable aircraft but all the maneuvers that you see in the video are from a specially modified jet that has had the Radar removed and all the onboard systems retro fitted and overidden witch makes the aircraft impressive but in combat useless not to mention we can shoot them 85 nm away anyway!

An AA-12 (R-77RVV-AE-PD) has a range of 160Km, that is 86.3376nm. They can blow you first.

www.bharat-rakshak.com...

Besides, what missile in USA inventory has 85nm range. I think you would be refering to FMRAAM (not still on production) intended range, because AMRAAM range is 39nm.

39nm vs 86nm. Seems USA planes are doomed without a better missile, don't you think?

The R-77 may have a longer range, but it is far less effective than the latest US AMRAAM version.
The new US fighters coming into production ( F-22, JSF ) using stealth characteristics will greatly reduce the range the R-77 can effectively be used in combat.

As for the S-37 manouverability; it looks good for demonstrations, but flying at those low speeds in combat would leave you a sitting suck.

Do you have links to some tests?

Although not as stealth, Su-47 have stealth capabilities, so AMRAAM range will be affected as well.

1.7Mach is not so far from F/A-22 2.0Mach. Besides, S-37 is a demonstrator.

the latest tests of the 22 put past mach 3, but maybe I shouldn't say anything about that...hehe... (and sorry, but no, there won't be a link to anything about it).

While more maneuverable, the Soviet fighter would be debris before he even made a visual on the F22....you can't lock on to what you can't see

So what if it can fly at mach 1.7, those manouvers it was performing cannot be done over the speed of sound. So it would be a sitting duck for any missile. The fact is acrobatics may look good for an airshow but are useless in combat.

Remember... speed and manueverability mean squat if you are the second to realize there is an enemy present. The F-14 Tomcat can see 20 miles out... The AWAC is still unsurpassed in threat detection.

Don't forget that the F-22 is stealthier that the SU-47(S-37) The F-22 has more advanced engines that the Su-47, it can supercruise at mach 1.58 (which means it can cruise at mach 1.58 WITHOUT using the afterburners, which makes it a lot more stealthier).

The engine has 35,000 pounds of thrust, 8,000 pounds more than the F-16's engine, and 6,000 more than the F-15.

the latest tests of the 22 put past mach 3

One comment;
Keep on dreaming....

do dogfights actually happens over the speed of sound?

im sure they must speed down and then the Su47 will be able to do one of those stunts to get behind the stinky F-22

both are stealth

Keep dreaming bud. That Su-47 would blown to pieces if it attempted one of those manouvres. In a dogfight speed equals life. Slowing down to the speeds the Su-47 does to perform its manouvres would be certain death.
Todays air to air missiles can pull too many gees for an aircraft doing those manouvres to evade.
So yes the Su-47 is good for acrobatics but would be blown to pieces doing those manouvres in combat.
