Student air passenger handcuffed to echoes of 9/11 fears

Philly.Com

EIGHT YEARS after 9/11, we're used to changes in our routines. We show ID to get into office buildings, and take off our shoes at airports.

But should a college student flying back to school be handcuffed and held for five hours because he has Arabic flash cards in his backpack?

That's the way Nick George, a senior at Pomona College, in California, sees what happened to him at the Philadelphia airport two Saturdays ago.

I don't believe this student is a threat, but apparently TSA does. He got a hair cut since his driver's license picture? Terrorist! He is trying to learn another language? Terrorist! To make matters worse, the police state they couldn't have left him in handcuffs for five hours simply because they don't make mistakes.

Something seriously needs to be done with our system because the more that people are involved to make "judgement calls", the more potentional for individuals abusing their authority for the sake of abusing.

Edit: Finally got the links working right. Apparently a wierd combination of keywords in the link was breaking it.

Racial profiling just doesn't work.

Tell that to the Police, though.

Put everything together- acting suspiciously, stamps on his passport from nations which support terrorists, flash cards with the words explosion and terrorist on them, and they had plenty of probable cause. He gave them attitude, as well, which didn't help his case.

As per the link-

The report filed on the incident suggests that George's "behavior escalated to a point where our officers deemed it necessary to contact the Philadelphia Police Department," Davis said.

Well, there are Muslim terror training camps in the US, so that may not be a bad idea. England doesn't need our tourist dollars.
