Swiss topple U.S. as most competitive economy: WEF

news.yahoo.com

GENEVA (Reuters) – Switzerland knocked the United States off the position as the world's most competitive economy as the crash of the U.S. banking system left it more exposed to some long-standing weaknesses, a report said on Tuesday.

The World Economic Forum's global competitiveness report 2009/2010 showed economies with a large focus on financial services such as the U.S., Britain or Iceland were the losers of the crisis.

The Swiss have a good economic model but so does America.

America's economic model would work fine if it wasn't for Government wasting and spending trillions of dollars and getting us in massive debt.

Here's a little about the Swiss economy:

Switzerland has a stable, modern and one of the most capitalist economies in the world. It has the 2nd highest European rating after Ireland in the Index of Economic Freedom 2008, while also providing large coverage through public services. The nominal per capita GDP is higher than those of the larger western European economies and Japan, ranking 6th behind Luxembourg, Norway, Qatar, Iceland and Ireland.

Switzerland has overwhelmingly private sector economy and low tax rates by Western standards; overall taxation is one of the smallest of developed countries. Switzerland is an easy place to do business; Switzerland ranks 16th of 178 countries in the Ease of Doing Business Index.

Switzerland also has universal health care. You don't need a massive public option.

You make health insurance mandatory for people making over 20,000 dollars a year. You subsidize those making below that amount. You get rid of pre-existing conditions and you allow people to shop for insurance across state lines.

This will be universal health care without a massive Government takeover.

This is not about healthcare with the democrats, it's about ideology. They want to ration healthcare services in order to slow the growth of Medicare instead of reforming the broken system.

Here's an article from the Atlantic:

The Republicans could instead offer a consumer-controlled universal coverage system, like that in Switzerland, in which the people, not the government, control how much they spend on health. There are no government health insurance programs. Instead, the Swiss choose from about 85 private heath insurers. Rather than being stuffed into the degrading Medicaid program, the Swiss poor shop for health insurance like everyone else, using funds transferred to them by the government. The sick are not discriminated against either -- they pay the same prices as everyone else in their demographic category. Like the US, Switzerland is a confederation of states that, as in the US, oversee the insurance system. Enforcement by the tax authorities has produced 99 percent enrollment.

If these politicians can keep the debt below 7 trillion in a 14.4 trillion dollar economy, Americans would be in great shape. Republicans like Bush and out of control liberals like Obama love to waste and spend money.

The speech Obama gave to the Unions was right out of 1950. We don't need a big government , union based economy.
