Daily Mirror editor Piers Morgan has stepped down following pressure to resign over faked photos of soldiers abusing an Iraqi prisoner.

Link

The Queen's Lancashire Regiment earlier told a press conference the Mirror had to apologise for running the pictures and endangering British troops.

More to come, this is breaking news, just happened in the last 20 minutes. It looks like the pressure has got to Piers Morgan and he has stepped down. Its believed that more members of the Daily mirror will be stepping down to. Its believed to be a board decision.

Updated. BBC and Sky News are saying its a board decision, but both parties agreed on the final decision.

It's about time, I have no respect for him after printing these pictures. The man has done untold damage, just to sell a few of his opinionated, low-class 'newspapers'.

I thought this story was about the paper that ran the porno pics.
They were obviously fake.
While the Mirror pictures were proven to be fake, at least the photos looked a little real.

Well, its believed that the pictures were faked by british troops. Apparently the Mirror paid 10,000 for the pictures.
Im glad he has gone, a lot of damage has been caused by those pictures.

You had respect for him before? I couldn't be happier that the lying hypocritical little weasel has slunk off into the night. The Mirror is gutter journalism at it's tawdriest.

Today is a Good Day.

Oh come on StrangeLands there's one more step to take before you reach the gutter, it's called The Sun.

Despite personal feelings I'm shocked he's gone, he seemed a very popular figure.

According to the article your linking to, it specifically states that Mr. Morgan was fired/"sacked"...

"According to one report Mr Morgan refused the demand to apologise, was sacked and immediately escorted from the building," he said.

Further backed by this:

"The board of Trinity Mirror has decided that it would be inappropriate for Piers Morgan to continue in his role as editor of the Daily Mirror and he will therefore be stepping down with immediate effect."

Mr. Morgan was fired....no agreement mentioned or indicated.

The big question here is that since the photos have been 'verified' as fake, just 'who' or 'whom' took them, gave them to The Mirror/Mr. Morgan, and what was their motive?

I guess in a way, it really doesn't matter cause the damage is done and UK and Coalition forces are now more at risk/danger. Abu Ghriab certainly didn't help matters at all either.

I agree, whether this worthless editor has stepped down or not, the damage has been done. It just gave something else to Al-Sadr's bunch to wave around during the sermon and stir up Shiite with. (Pun intended) None of the citizens over there are going to even question it--"the Mullah says it's so, it must be true!"

Seems that a UK Soldier was arrested in connection with the 'fake' UK prisoner abuse photos:
Soldier arrested over Mirror hoax photos

LONDON (Reuters) - At least one soldier has been arrested over fake pictures showing alleged mistreatment of Iraqi prisoners by British troops, the defence ministry says.

The photos were published in the Daily Mirror just days after similar ones were published in the United States showing U.S. soldiers abusing prisoners, shocking the world and causing widespread anger in the Arab world.

A spokeswoman would give no further details about the arrest by the ministry's Special Investigation Branch (SIB).
