Right why?

It's basically telling kids to expect to suffer and work hard...

and why?

we are being stolen from... we are being abused, we are just blatantly pouring our money out to other nations, when in reality by material concern we are still the wealthiest nation on earth

What is good that they should come to terms with Slavery NOW while young?

It's like a big inmate telling a little inmate to enjoy his rape because eventually if he endures it he will be set free and no longer be raped anymore...

Wow... how do you take a mindset like that? That's way too cool/cute!

I have a really good memory.

I make NO judgment call,

Riiiiight!

By the way, people who are keeping their kids out of school because of this speech are teaching them a very 'interesting' lesson. And that is to not listen to those with whom they (or their parents) disagree. To close their eyes and ears to those who don't meet their world view. You're teaching them to close their minds. To be closed-minded... Yay!

I read it, and my frank opinion is that it served no purpose whatsoever other than for Obama to say he did something about education. What's next, the education czar is going to prepare a public address for all the schools? Then the Secretary of Education? It's just a dog and pony show.

Mabey the president is an expert at "Neural Linguistic Programing"

and that the whole speech is a hypnotic tool

Ummm. How about the "purpose" of the most powerful man in the world, the first black president, and one of the most appealing politicians to young people since recent memory, motivating our next generation to strive for more? That's a pretty good purpose, doncha think?

It reads different when you take your political spin hat off doesn't it? Make no mistake, speeches like this are done to promote "something." That's a given, but we also need to look and see if there are actual non-political benefits or consequences to it. In this case, he's wildly popular among the youth. He should use that popularity to motivate them

Did they change the date for the speech? I thought it was supposed to be shown to school kids today. Both my children, who go to different schools, said it never came up. Perhaps it was a brainwashing speech designed to make them forget they saw it.

Oh sweet mercy!!! How dare that evil man tell our children such utter nonsense!!! What a bunch of partisan, left wing, socialist propaganda!!! THE MAN IS JUST EVIL!!! [/sarcasm]

I just hope that people who immediately jumped to the conclusion that 'if Obama is going to say it, it must be bad' will actually wait until the man speaks before deciding what is what! I really feel sorry for the students whose parents are keeping them home, or keeping their school from showing it. It is a message that all school age children should hear. Shame on those who prejudged this! You're doing your children a GREAT disservice!

I just saw this speech. It seemed a little propagandaish but it was mostly fine. They did work the flu into it though, which I thought was odd seeing as it's a speech about education. Another odd thing I noticed was in the beginning he said something about how his mother wanted him to go to the school all the "americans" went to.

What we need, and I know some people out there downloaded them before they were completely changed, is the original lesson plans. From them we should be able to come up with a pretty solid idea of what the original speech looked like.

Granted, I feel that a president SHOULD speak to the children of this nation. Not about politics and such but how this re-written speech did. I was uncomfortable with the original ideas of the speech and the original lesson plans about 'what you can do to help your president'. Just not the greatest idea from this camp.

The problem wasn't the fact he was speaking to the kids. The problem was the 'ORIGINAL' lessons that was to accompany the speech were slanted in a way that could be viewed as indoctrination. Being a student of psychology I know how manipulative the young mind can be. They swallow ANYTHING up that is said to them by people in positions of power. The president being who he is would make a HUGE impression. So, with that said, we will NEVER know what the original speech was to entail. If someone can post the original worksheets we can see how well they jive with this speech.

Also, the 'swine flu' should NEVER have been brought up. Because of the controversial aspect of the 'epidemic'. By bringing that up the kids will bring it up with their parents and thus think more about getting the Big Pharma sponsored vaccines. The ones that have NOT and WILL NOT be tested before they are forced on us.

I know, it's voluntary. For now.

Overall, the speech given wasn't so bad. I actually think it was pretty good. Just don't think for one minute that it was the original speech.

HUH...

"It’s the story of students who sat where you sit 250 years ago, and went on to wage a revolution and found this nation. Students who sat where you sit 75 years ago who overcame a Depression and won a world war; who fought for civil rights and put a man on the moon. Students who sat where you sit 20 years ago who founded Google, Twitter and Facebook and changed the way we communicate with each other.... "

That's actually NOT what he said on TV. Please check it if you have it recorded.

I think you are falling off both sides of the wagon, so to speak.

If students should NOT get vaccines (which you infer, I think mistakenly, he is telling children to do merely by using the word "vaccine"somewhere in his speech) then they certainly SHOULD wash their hands. Otherwise they will spread the swine flu, or any other type of flu, very quickly.

IMO Obama was just throwing in what the Department of Health wanted children to know (wash your hands, stay home from school if you're sick so as not to spread the flu or other infection). He was just doing his bit for public health. No big conspiracy there.

It depends on how you wash your hands. Using stuff like germ-x simply makes the germs stronger. Good old fashioned water does the trick fine on its own usually. I was really surprised he mentioned the flu actually, although he didn't mention the swine flu in particular.

Here's another possibility... What if they intentionally wrote the original lesson plans with a little something to get the right fired up, with the current ones already written just waiting for the right to go nuts and get the media attention that they got, all the while planning on giving that very speech, making the right look stupid and reactionary. In that case, they played the right like a harp from Hell!

They won't wait next time either, Jaxon. This was all calculated. They want to paint Obama a Marxist, so they will take every opportunity to do so. By now they've moved on to disparaging him on other issues, or now they're saying "Well, HE CHANGED THE SPEECH, I KNOW IT!"

and BTW...

Mental might be able to chime in on this if he's still contributing to this thread, but a few notable "Obama's Indoctrinating our Children!" ATS members are noticeably absent from this discussion. They just "seemed" to drop off from the discussion after the speech.

The reports of protesters RIGHT OUTSIDE the school where he was giving the speech was especially aggravating. Now "who's" politicizing and indoctrinating our children? How do you think the kids felt with these cooks and their signs right outside their school?

Well you have that dead ON correct.

That is a good lesson for children IMHO,

Without addressing Obama too deeply I think he is a good man, I just don't happen to agree with him on allot of issues and that is what a free country is all about.

The President addressing Children, to a child this is a HUGE thing. I don't help elect a president for him to get involved in social policy I want a president to handle the Economy, Military and International affairs and other issues of importance...

Obama is busy dealing with the people and it's not effective.

I don't think social policy or OPINION belongs in schools period I want my children there to do what SCHOOL is intended to do, teach Reading Writing Arithmetic and Science.

It's MY job to raise and inform my child of who I want him to be, mostly we might not agree with the bulk of people who home school or feel as I do... the reasoning behind it be it religion or other in my case...

But it is your right to raise your own children and it is social conditioning

School was never intended for the teaching of sexuality, political agendas, social values or morality, it was intended to provide direct knowledge and it is becoming something else entirely

This doesn't foster new ideas and creativity it creates drones...

You like Obama, in many ways so do I

Perhaps I am wrong, perhaps it is a completely innocuous speech (which I totally disagree with) but for sake of being fair

It's still not a precedent I agree with, no matter what other Presidents have done this...

Regan and Bush should keep it among adults too, we can not be naive as to what influence over our children can mean in thee wrong hands can actually become. It doesn't have a place.

I think it's pathetic, as pathetic as Bush being in some classroom during 9-11 reading stories...

Is this how other world leaders spend their time, posing for pictures with kids and speaking to children?

Even if there is nothing wrong with whats being said it's still wrong

Presidents.... don't get "a life" your in charge of the defense of a nation, the security of a nation, it's a 24/7 detail, your on call every moment... that time , you have it on your hands stop talking to kids and get Putin on the Line... Or Ahmedinejad and keep your promise of making peace in the world

Our problems are COUNTLESS there si something productive that can be done every waking minute of the day and far more important than addressing the nations children...

I'm sorry I like the man personally... would love to meet him, but he is acting as a community organizer not a president.

He's wildly popular among a late teen early 20's demographic

SPONGEBOB is wildly popular among 5-10 yr olds and this is how things should STAY

Not all of us want to raise our kids as he does, pet less and without Christmas some of us believe kids need to be KIDS

Obama got up at 4:300 am...good for him, and glad he got to be President

But I don't think we need MORE nationalism and I don't think we need to compete with every militaristic nation on Earth to be No 1 at everything....

Given a Choice at 39 years of age... To be President or hugely successful

Vs

Not having or been allowed to have a childhood

I'll take mediocrity and a Life I enjoy

I don't want my kids to be president of anything, I want them to live, yet another good reason I don't need those who seek great power influencing my children.
