Yea I was thinking it was an owl. We have them down south too and I hear the same screetch at night sometimes. I guess that is why they call it a
screetch owl...

I do believe that is a common screech owl. I live in Kentucky, in the middle of nowhere and very close to the woods and I hear them fairly often.
Click here to hear a screech owl. Sound about right?
I think they sound kind of spooky, but I love to hear them at night!

I also live in KY. In the mountains right next to the highest point in the state. Sounds like a creech owl to me.

Screech owl. Common in Appalachia.

Yes actually, one time while camping we heard a noise that sounded like a ferocious sheep. It turned out to be a deer being attacked by wild dogs.

It's some sort of bird for sure, and it's night so I'd say Owl.
Bobcats make the scariest of sounds for sure. I don't know what makes a worse sound in the middle of the night than a bobcat. At least with a cougar,
you can tell it's more of roar. But with bobcats it sounds like a mutant demon house cat.
