Which is exactly what should be happening Ashley, It should be he option and decision of every parent, and every American. But instead this is being required of all children to watch this.

If you read H.R. 1388, which was passed by President Obama, and which we have had several threads about, and even excerpted information directly from the bill you will understand why so many Americans are against this.

Federal tyranny...? Are you serious with that? After everything the last administration did, NOW there's tyranny from the government?

You're not concerned about real tyranny at all. You're concerned that the right is out of power, as evidenced by your overuse of the words collectivist and leftist in your post.

Clinton had so many people that hated him with a passion. The actors this time around are all the same, except Clinton has been replaced by a black man, and oh... my... god... the RIGHT is in an ultra-tizzy.

And take a class in logic. Administration B being tryanical is not a function of Administration A. And in case you haven't noticed Administration A is gone. Duh.

No Mr. flawgic

One cannot determine if Administration B is being tyrannical unless there is contextual
information which references what tyranny entails.

I will give you an example

I'm sad.

Sad and disheartened.

Sad, disheartened, and fearful of the future when here, a venue of "denying ignorance," we see so many people beholding to the sensationalist lies of "news as entertainment" media pundits as well as the blind "worship" of a politician with graceful words.

If anyone, or any group of people should know better, it should be us.

Regardless of your support of whichever artificially constructed "side" of the contemporary political spectrum, no student engaged in learning the art of critical thinking should ever be denied the opportunity to hear a sitting president. In fact, regardless of the ideology represented by the nameplate on the oval office, I'd prefer an address to students every semester of every school year.

Some of the comments in this thread, and the plethora of other left-versus-right threads on ATS, demonstrate (to a lesser degree than the debacle impairing our nation) the culture we have wrought -- one where knowledge is not embraced and innuendo rules the day.

The strategy of "Damn the country, Obama must fail" has taken a deep hold on the rhetoric of the "right-side" political entertainers... and even here on ATS we see belief in the sensational lies.

Sad.

I don't like, but understand the "left-side" doe-eyed hope that Obama represents real change. If only that were true, I'd love to be doe-eyed but for a time. His graceful words are are little more than wonderfully crafted emptiness.

Sad.

But, as Nixon has shown us, from time to time even the most despicable politician can emerge with well-intended ideas. The motivation for the ideas may be misguided, but even a lumbering stumbling step in the right direction, is a step in the right direction.

The president asking our children to think and learn, is a step in the right direction. Be it Bush, Obama, Regan, Clinton... it's something I want to hear.

i agree with most of what you say...and i'm relieved that the site owner of ATS is a person of sane mind.

my one disagreement is that as a democrat, and one who was very pleased that obama won, i was under no delusion, or "doe-eyed" as you put it, that Obama would be able to translate what he believes, into actual federal action. i think that once a president gets into office, he is "educated" not only to what his power can accomplish, but also to the limitations of that power by others. i myself, remain ignorant of who they might be, but there are many posts on ATS, that proclaim to know.

with that said, i think the american people need a bit more of progressive legislation in their lives, so as to hold onto the middle class of this country. too much of raw capitalism results in a poor/rich society, instead of a balance of a poor/middle class/rich society. obama or any other president, would never be able to turn this country into a socialist nation. individualism, combined with inovation and a passion for freedom, simply would not permit it.

Thanks, EU.

Yes, I understand why the parents are against it. My previous post was basically directed at those who wish to criticize the parents for whatever choice they make. It seems a lot of heat is coming down on the parents who are choosing to dismiss their children from viewing the address but that is very, very wrong.

It should be the parent's decision and not anyone else's business. That's what I'm trying to say. In other words, haggle over the video and the politics but leave the parents alone. We're not going to be bullied or shamed into doing what the state tells us.

You don't even have the base facts right.

It is not a requirement.

You've hung around this discussion this long without the most rudimentary information available? You didn't know it is voluntary?

Who is bullying AD???

Cause I have yet to hear ONE PERSON say that parents HAVE TO GO or ( )

However people are questioning the motive and validity of parents concerns, but I have yet to hear anyone try to persuade one of these parents...

The Left chooses to act in concert , in GROUPthink. Thus it was their choice. So you see, I make exceptions to my world view in order to conform to reality. I dont ignorantly or unrealistically still regard Leftists as individual because they themselves don't.

Thats another area where you Lefties fail. You do not take people at their word. You do not accept the reasons they give for why they do what they do. Instead you assign to them whatever reason your obsolete and presumptions worldview says they should have.

That's why you folks call everyone you disagree with racists, right?

Please notice I said 'bully and shame.'

I just heard about this in detail for the first time yesterday and already I've seen parents who are opting to keep their child home that day be accused of:

1). Dividing America.
2). Racism.
3). Acting like nutcases.
4). Having biases along party lines.
5). Only caring about their children now but not being a good parent in other areas.
6). Not respecting the position of the president/being unpatriotic.
7). Brainwashing their children into their own beliefs.
8). Being ignorant.

I'm sure there are more but those stood out to me in the 24 hours or so I've been keeping up with this.

Actually, the only ones who obviously are not "using their brains" happen to be people like you....

When the president has shown to want to implement laws, and taxes having to do with CO2 and the hoax of "Global Warming", when the president and his administration have been talking about Compulsory Community Service, even by children and then children are being asked "what do you think the president wants you to do?" among other "indoctrination techniques. What do you think the children are going to say, and believe?

Use your brain a little bit.

as a boy scout in the sixties, we were made to feel proud that we could help someone in our community and we were rewarded with merit badges.
jack kennedy said "ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country". millions of people who volunteer their time through their churches, kiwanis club, lions club, hospice, girl scouts, boy scouts, as little league coaches, hurricane clean-up, tornado clean-up, vounteer fire depts. neighborhood watch programs, feed the hungry programs, x-mas toy drives by the local fire dept, etc. ...are apparently to you....INDOCTRINATION!!!!....yeah...we wouldn't want Obama to inspire little billy to those "techniques"....

What are "you/your system" going to do about that?

Lets see what kind Socialisms Obama practices!

The RECOVERY ACT-

open bid contracts

the STATES and COUNTIES are the executors

Why would a "socialist" put his name on something that is based on open COMPETITION and give the leave the ultimate contractual decisions to local and state officials? EVERY single contract to be SUB contracted to PRIVATE entities.

SMELLS LIKE -----

CAPITALISM

Uw, Uw, pick me, pick me!!!

Let's see what form of political model Obama picks...

Takeover of GM, government owns 60% of GM, Canada owns another large portion of it. A previous PRIVATE company is now owned mainly by the U.S. but in part also by CANADA.

Obama passed among the many laws H.R. 1388, in which the Corporation is given total power over all learn-based programs/education, as well as Community Service programs.

The Corporation also has the responsibility to teach professors what to teach children, and this applies not oly to public schools but to private schools as well as schools in reservations.

Another law was passed in which all COMPULSORY Community Srvice will be done without paying Americans, and Emmanuel Rahm, who happens to be Obama's Chief of staff, in case some people don't know, has stated that the Obama administration will require ALL Americans to do some form of Compulsory Community Service. This will include retired, and disabled Americans. This happens in Socialist dictatorships.

And among the many other things the Obama administration also wants to implement the ideology of "redistribution of wealth".

I wonder where those came from...

And no, I don't think the majority of righties are racists, but I do think your ideas thrive on xenophobia.

I do a lot of reading , especially by authors who themselves are former Leftists... so they have provided me with a lot of insights of how that ideology works.

One of my favorites is Tammy Bruce.. if anyone is interested in what she has to say about her former days being head of Los Angeles NOW and her conversion from Leftist activist to Conservative, this is a video from the early 2000s on her book "The New Thought Police" and "The Death of Right and Wrong"

This article highlights it beautifully.

#1 the lefty rag makes the right look like loony bastards for their response to obama's message to children on education.

#2 the right totally go loony over a speech intended to talk to kids about the importance of education and some how equate it to communist china and nazi germany.

both sides just need to shut the hell up, take a few deep breaths and start acting like adults, unless they are in fact children in which case they just need to 'play nice'.

we (the people of the usa) have become our own worst enemies.

Your example above is actually pretty close to what is passing for political discourse lately, but saying they are equivalent behaviors is just not true.

What is the best way to react to this weeks right wing manufactured outrage?

Through my right wing friends at work I recently learned some very important facts like Obama is anti-American because he drank a budweiser, had kraft grey poupon on a sandwich, and OMG, he wants to kill my grandma and Sarah Palen's baby. Obama attempting to turn our kids into hitler youth is just this weeks fake outrage product.

Mocking is about all you have left at a certain point. #1 in your example above is reacting to obvious BS. I honestly think there is a think-tank somewhere originating this stuff that is laughing their asses off at the fact people get wound up about this stuff and drown out any discussion of the issues that really effect peoples lives.

I'm no Obama apologist, in fact I have serious issues with his policies. The sad fact is that this conversation never gets off the ground because both sides cant even agree on provable facts.

I understand where you're coming from. But bullying can be so much more than committing violence. It can also be psychological to intimidate others to conform to your will.

dictionary.reference.com...

And that is what this feels like. If a parent makes a personal decision for their child, they shouldn't be bullied and shamed by others whose business it isn't.
