NATO Airstrike in Afghanistan Kills Up to 90, Including Civilians

KABUL — A NATO jet blasted two fuel tankers hijacked by the Taliban in northern Afghanistan, setting off a huge fireball Friday that killed up to 90 people, including dozens of civilians, Afghan officials said.

Afghan President Hamid Karzai issued a statement saying he was creating a panel to investigate the attack. "Targeting civilians is unacceptable for us," he said.

A German officer who led two platoons to the site for an investigation found the hulks of the two tankers "completely burned out." But he said Afghan soldiers had removed the human remains.

Later, Afghans began burying some of those killed in a mass grave.

Mass graves are great! Makes me feel like a real American.

Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said insurgents hijacked the trucks as they were headed from Tajikistan to supply NATO forces in Kabul.

Omar, the provincial governor, said that the Taliban killed two drivers and that the bullet-riddled body of one them had been found.

Mujahid said that when the hijackers tried to drive the trucks across the Kunduz River, the vehicles became stuck in the mud and the insurgents opened valves to release fuel and lighten the loads, he said.

He said villagers swarmed the trucks to collect the fuel despite warnings that they might be hit with an airstrike.

Mujahid said no Taliban died in the attack.

Differing stories, of course, depending on who you talk to.
The big question I have, is HOW? How were these two fuel trucks hijacked if they were headed to resupply NATO forces?

We drive loaded fuel trucks through Afghanistan without escorts? Um...I'm not a general or anything, but doesn't that sound a little STUPID?

"Steps must also be taken to examine what happened and why an air strike was employed in circumstances where it was hard to determine with certainty that civilians were not present," he said, adding that a U.N. team would be sent to Kunduz to investigate

Well....I can save you guys a lot of trouble on that one..it's because they DON'T CARE if civilians are turned into ashes. But wait, the UN will be on scene soon, and they will surely get to the bottom of this. (barf)

You know guys, this wouldn't happen if we weren't IN Afghanistan. Screw 'em. Get our boys and girls out of there and let them solve their own problems.
