It is hot in Brussels. Ramadan has begun. The faithful in the predominantly Muslim borough of Molenbeek are not allowed to eat or drink from sunrise until sunset. Non-Muslim policemen, patrolling the streets of Molenbeek in their sweltering cars, are not allowed to eat or drink either. As every year during Ramadan, they have been told by their superior, Philippe Moureaux, the Socialist mayor of Molenbeek, that they have to respect Muslim sensitivities and not to “provoke” Muslims by violating Islamic Ramadan restrictions in public. In effect, Islamic or Sharia law is already applied – for everyone – in the Muslim areas of Brussels...

...Some friends in Brussels organize one-hour trips through Molenbeek. They go in an inconspicuous car, driven by a local who knows the escape routes, and with a bodyguard. Otherwise the risk would be too great. These trips are called “safaris.” Similar “Eurabia safaris” are organized in other European cities.

I am still reading and fascinated by the article you linked to. Before I finish, I wanted to point out this paragraph.

In Muslim countries, such as Indonesia, the police steps up patrols during Ramadan in order to crack down on illegal nightly activities. In Europe, however, the police has been given orders to adopt an extra low profile so as not to “provoke” Muslim populations. In countries such as Britain, police officers have had to attend “Ramadan awareness” courses. They have even been ordered, “for reasons of religious sensitivity,” to avoid the execution of arrest warrants on Muslims during the month of Ramadan. During Ramadan, Europe is a tinder box.

Why is the law being down played? Are they afraid of riots or rebellion or something? Police being given orders to downplay their duties and not "provoke" muslims? Wow.

I should have finished reading, I would have found this sooner.

The recognition of polygamous marriages of Muslim men indicates that Sharia law is already accepted in many European countries, where polygamy used to be illegal – and still is illegal for non-Muslims. They have implicitly accepted a system of “legal apartheid” with different legal systems for Muslims and non-Muslims. The decision to avoid arresting Muslims during Ramadan “for reasons of religious sensitivity,” thereby treating Muslims and non-Muslims differently, confirms this existence of a dual legal system. It is difficult to see how such a dual legal system can continue to exist on the same territory. Ultimately, one of the legal systems will have to prevail. The decision of the Molenbeek mayor that non-Muslim police officers have to respect the Ramadan prescriptions indicates what the next step will be if Europe’s authorities fail to impose the existing laws of the land on Islamic immigrants: the imposition of Sharia law on everyone, non-Muslims as well as Muslims. While Europe’s Muslims hold their Ramadan, this is something worth pondering for Europe’s non-Muslims.

Wow again.

The basic problem, as I see it, with Europe is that every country is run by bureaucrats. Bureaucrats have nice cushy jobs for life with every conceivable perk and probably many of them spend little time actually doing any work. There are a lot of "make-work" programs with names like "the department of progressive cultural and social harmony" and so on that basically do....nothing.

These people are TERRIFIED of US style capitalism...but for the wrong reasons. Recent events have proven that hypercapitalism, with its culture of shady cabals of insiders and fast-n-loose, hardly-an-regulations, is indeed something that should be feared deeply both in the US and around the world. But the fear of the Eurocrats stems from an earlier era, and is rooted in simpler reasons: They are terrified of losing their cushy jobs in the face of real competition. They want at all cost to avoid any competitive, capitalistic system (even a fair, sane, and well-regulated one, like we once supposed we had) from EVER rearing its head and booting them from the comfort of their ergonomically-designed Swedish desks.

That is why, for decades, the US has been bashed again and again and again in the European press...pick up any paper from Paris to Prague and will you see much diversity of opinion on this topic? NO! This is because the Eurocrats have been using their little bureaucratic powers to wheedle and cajole and threaten a pliant press to hammer "AMERICA = BAD" into the minds of every European citizen since about 1970. And they know that no matter how much they say this, NATO and the US Military will come to their rescue if necessary...heavens, what would all these highly-leveraged socialist nations with huge debts and ageing societies facing underfunded national pension plans do if they actually had to PAY FOR THEIR OWN DEFENSE? Well, lets not think about that. Let's just print up another article chuckling at how fat or uneducated or lazy Americans are, while we huddle under their security blanket.

Then there is the oil factor...a number of the Eurocrats have decided to play "softball" with the Islamic world. The theory: Friendlier relations plus more immigration = closer ties to oil producing nations over the long run. On paper, it doesn't seem so bad...they lack the muscle of the US or the guts of the Russians or Chinese to move in there and simply take what they want, so they will try to secure their own needs in a more diplomatic way. Unfortunately, this long-term, mult-decade plan (and who, besides an army of Bureaucratic lifers, has time to concoct such things) is failing. Why is it failing? Because they did not fully grasp the issues associated with mass immigration and integration (or lack therof). Instead, they opted for the most weak, "inoffensive" politically-correct approaches dreamed up by state-sponsored academics with their heads in the clouds.

You see, as a bunch of socialist bureaucrats who were starry-eyed students carrying volumes of Marx and Mao under their arms in the '60s, it makes perfect sense to "promote diversity" and to assume everyone will just naturally get along while preserving their "colorful and exotic" traditions. And if anyone will have to change to accommodate the situation, of course it will be the big bad evil original Europeans with their terrible histories of oppression and colonialism.

And so we have come to our present pass...a Europe increasingly alienated from an America deeply mired in its own problems, such Europe facing problems with immigration and integration they refuse to acknowledge (while at least the US had its open debates and civil rights period). Meanwhile they have fragile demographics (ageing society) and rely on some nebulous neo-Marxist ideal of "creating good relations" with the oil-bearing regions of the world through "cultural exchange" and "diversity". So far, the picture ain't pretty.
