Powerful earthquake kills 44 in Indonesia, dozens feared buried

www.cnn.com

The 7.0-magnitude temblor jolted the Indonesian island of Java earlier in the day, killing at least 44 people and injuring more than 400, according to the National Disaster Coordinating Agency.

The landslide buried at least 11 homes where 32 people live in the town of Cianjur, local officials told CNN's Andy Saputra.

The quake struck shortly before 3 p.m. (4 a.m. ET). Its epicenter was located offshore about 190 kilometers (120 miles) southeast of Jakarta, according the U.S. Geological Survey. The center was about 50 kilometers (31 miles) deep. A tsunami watch went into effect but quickly expired

The first related thread tells of a 6.8 earthquake that happened about 2.5 weeks ago. Alot of earth moving action going on in Indonesia recently.

Wow! That is chillingly accurate!

From above webbot thread

Here we go again. The Half Past Human Web Bot project is indicating an earthquake to happen sometime between Sept 2 and Sept 5. The quake will be stronger than usual and will affect land by toppling buildings. Magnitude may be 6.8 - 8+.

Things that come out of the data:
Earthquake
Maybe 34th or 38th degree parallel
Images of building collapse still being watched weeks later
Sept 2 - 5 with highest probability on the 3rd / 4th

It is speculated that the quakes will hit remote region such as parts of Asia because the images of building collapse are being viewed so far after the fact - but that is merely speculation.

Fortunately, its depht was approx. 50 km: this of course reduced the damages, kept the death toll relatively low and likely reduced the chances of some bad side effects like tsunami. The same shock occurring with an hypocenter at some ten kilometers (or less) would have been some catastophical event. In the bad luck they have been relatively lucky after all. There will be more shocks, but progressively decreasing in strenght unless some seismic couple (which is some rare event) would happen.
My condolences to the relatives of the victims.

Wow, great minds do think alike as I was going to post the same exact thing and attach the same exact thread lol... Although the quake was two days early from the prediction it still is another prediction come true. I'm heart broken for Indonesia but I again am glad to see anther prediction come true.

Update:
Dozens trapped as Indonesia quake toll rises to 46

CIKANGKARENG, Indonesia – Rescue workers on Indonesia's Java island searched by hand Thursday for dozens of people trapped by a major 7.0-magnitude earthquake that killed at least 46, officials said.

Police and soldiers were called in to help find people buried in collapsed homes and buildings in Cianjur district south of the capital Jakarta in the wake of the quake, which caused panic across the densely-populated island, officials said.

"There are 46 people dead (across Java) and about 42 are still buried in Cianjur. Their chances of surviving are slim," disaster management agency spokesman Priyadi Kardono told AFP.

"So far we are digging them out manually with hoes, but we hope to bring in the heavy machinery soon," he said.

In the worst-hit village of Cikangkareng, the earthquake caused landslides that stripped hillsides bare and smothered homes.

Let's hope that they will all be rescued, it's important to hurry

They are still having aftershocks, but as said before, they are of a smaller magnitude (about 5.0-magnitude, and will keep decreasing) wich is normal in these circumstances.

Thanks for the update internos. I really hope they are able to get some machinery to assist in their search for the missing.
