There are lots of medieval paintings that verge on the grotesque showing suffering Christ on the cross. Emaciated, face streaming with blood, eyes
rolling heavenward, perhaps...grimly realistic depcitions of spear wounds and nails hammered through the palm...
I'd be interested in which one or ones you personally find the most evocative of raw, physical suffering. The Eastern Orthodox icons tended to go in
for images of "Christ, Pantocraster"...the risen Christ, presiding over the cosmos in splendor. The Western Catholic church, on the other hand,
tended to record His suffering in excruciating (often literally) detail.
So, any links along those lines? Thanks in advance.
