Recent rulings by Colorado's Supreme Court – considered by some as the "most partisan in the nation" – have demonstrated their contempt for the Constitution. Four justices – Michael Bender, Alex Martinez, Nancy Rice, and Chief Justice Mary Mullarkey – have recently taxed cars, background checks on guns and every firearm sale, and tobacco. While I am not and never have been a smoker, these creeping Colorado taxes may find their way into other currently exempt areas including services (like dry cleaning, car maintenace, carpet shampooing or hair stylists), groceries, internet access, gasoline and residential heating fuel. Combine these hits with all of the tax increases Pres. Obama is mulling, we'll barely have money to mail him our yearly tax returns.

Matt Arnold has a simple, practical solution for this out-of-control court: Clear The Bench Colorado! If these judges are permitted to split hairs on fees vs. taxes, you can bet other states will take notice and follow suit.

Millenium Ark

This is getting outrageous.

In my book a fee is a tax and I dont want it any where on any person.
This goes right in line with the fact banks are making money, not because of increased consumerism but because of charging fees out the wazoo!

VOTE THEM OUT!

Bingo. Yes. For three decades now, I have heard the various mantras about no/low taxes. What was not explained to the hearers was the implication of lower tax rates/taxes: fees. True, some lower tax heralds at first pointed out that user fees would be instituted.

For example, 20 years ago a family member was happily voting straight national/state Republican tickets, because she wanted lower taxes. Then her children hit school age and her few dollar tax savings greatly increased into a fee, each time she wrote the check to pay for school buses for the kids.

Under a tax, school busing was free. Under a fee, she had to pay. Also, some roads were no longer covered under highway taxes, free to drive on, but had tolls imposed. Things that used to be free or low cost for families, overnight came with a new fee or a much higher fee. (parks, for example)

Taxes spread the cost around. Fees are imposed on the user. When middle class voters helped lower taxes on corporations and the wealthy, middle class voters were stuck being more burdened with fees. A corporation or millionaire wouldn't be as burdened with the new fee as the middle/lower class worker/family. Fees increasingly took up more and more of the decreasing disposable income of the average American.

A millionaire's family could still find it affordable to jet the family to a vacation anywhere in the world. The increasingly burdened average American family found new fees at local campgrounds, parks, museums, lakes, and other such recreational venues.

Speaking of vacations (or college tuition!), notice that the middle class was being told to pay for their vacation (or tuition...or health care!) by taking out a loan or re-financing their house. Even the vacation/tuition/surgery/doctor visit was becoming something to be put on credit.

Anyway, the less wealthy American voter, whipped into a frenzy about greatly lowering corporate and wealthy families' taxes, seemed to forget the quite valid old saws about "no free lunch" and "you can't get something for nothing". Thus, we are left with an increasing amount of fees, enough to lighten the wallet or quickly clean out the checking account...thereby imposing a new fee!

In NW Florida... they added a toll bridge to the western side of Gulf Breeze. It connects to a county road that leads up to the interstate. The idea was to lessen the traffic load on Highway 98... and to prevent people from having to drive to Navarre to get up to the Interstate. (the long way)

The only problem is... no one drives it... (much). They barely make enough money to cover the toll staff. So.. they hired a consulting group from New Jersey to study the problem. After much research... they came up with a brilliant plan. Raise the toll.

Now less people drive it.

When a politician says no new taxes what he really means is that he will get to your pocketbook by calling them fees instead of taxes.

That way there are NO NEW TAXES. but they can still get your money.
