Help identify this scary looking fish

Topic started on 28-8-2009 @ 11:45 PM by venividivici

I was reading an ATS thread and found myself googling Uranium City in northern Saskatchewan Canada. From there I clicked a flikr photo album and came across this:

presumably it is a fish out of one of the lakes up there (Athabasca?). Apparently, that lake has 23 species of fish. Including Lake Trout, Northern Pike, Walleye, Yellow Perch.

I doesn't look like any fresh water fish I've seen in Canada and I live here. I gotta say, judging by the color of the skin of the handlers, I think this photo was mis-catagorized. Is it a barracuda? It's not a Musky, is it? I've caught northern pike, this is no northern. I've ever seen!

I used to go noodling for catfish. Now after seeing that I will never again shove my hand in a hole underwater for a fish to latch onto.

Thank you very much for ruining an activity that used to give me a lot of enjoyment.

Yep, that's what it is.

They are found in several African lakes, will eat anything they think they can take on, and apparently grow to 55Kg !

Believe it or not some people keep these as pets in oversized aquariums.

I think he was referring the the other 2 pics in the link you provided. One of them was the exact same as the one I posted. You have to scroll through the window to see the second and third pictures.

At first I thought it was Nancy Pelosi without a wig, but it does appear to be a Tiger fish, found lurking in the mighty Congo.

Scary lookin.

When I click on the link I posted I just get a single image.

Good god you can't be serious? The introduction of alien species is on the biggest environmental problems we have. Fish like that might well eat themselves (and every other species) out of existence wherever you stocked them. i love fishing as much as the next guy but I don't think I want to be pulling my leader out of the mouths of one of those!

I've seen in a reservoir in Northern Quebec a pike that was about 5 feet long. I've also seen a 6 foot long sturgeon in the St-Lawrence river.

But I have never heard or seen anyone attacked seriously by those fish. They are way more scarred by us than we are by them.
