VERY glad to see this forum! Thank you Mods for getting it up and running. I have already bookmarked this forum as a favorite and plan to visit this forum at least 5 times a week.(lunchtime at work) I, too, am a proponent of the survival lifestyle and have taught my son many things including finding and eating of wild edibles here in the midwest.

Admittedly, wild edibles in the middle of winter is still frustrating to me. Sure, hunting/trapping is a great resource, but when the shelves are empty in the stores, the woods and fields will be FULL of people and guns. Pretty much all game will be gone within a couple of weeks. Once people figure out how to take fish in the winter by employing illegal techniques, the lakes, ponds and rivers will be void within 4-5 weeks.

Basically, the only food one will have is what they stored ahead of time and the sparse wild edibles that are available in the winter. It wont take the criminal element long to start gathering food from those who DID prepare. The bottom line is this: I need to be able to collect enough wild edibles to sustain my family and myself through the winter. I could probably do that for myself, but for a family of five...I just don't have the skills I need for the above scenario. And that's frustrating...

I own several survival guides and wild edibles books and have all but memorized them. Any tips?

I have to say, Mark, that I thought your blog was well thought out, and contained alot of salient points. You obviously have been thinking along survival lines for a while, and have well articulated answers for questions/half formed plans that I have been mulling over myself. I guess that a person can get caught up in wondering how bad, which scenario, etc.,which muddies the waters and can make planning more difficult. Your blog cuts to the chase, with a few chuckles thrown in for good measure. Well worth the read, and will continue to go through it...added it to my faves...Thanks!

Well I'm in the planning stage of my
BOB and while I was sittin there I got to thinking about ALL of my gear being in one bag, I don't really like that idea. What would I do if I lost the bag or it was stolen? Would it be smarter for me to plan maybe a bug outfit? If I have durable pants/jacket etc with many pockets would that be smarter for storing things like compasses, weapons, minor provisions. Then I could store the bigger necessities in my bag and not have to worry about losing my whole entire world in one bag. Example being the knife I have, it also has a compass, flint, matches, blade sharpener, needle, string all in the handle. It would all be gone if the knife was taken/dropped/lost.

Semper - sorry if this question has already been asked....but I was impatient and didnt read every post. But I would like to know your thoughts on groups of people. Are small groups better or larger groups for survival. If you were alone or just a couple of people, how would you size up a larger group to hook up with? I can see how there is safety in numbers, but I could also see how moving/rationing/hiding would be easier with a snaller group.

Your thoughts?

(anyone can feel free to answer this as well....)

Okay I have a very good hypothetical for you....

Are you familiar with Wiki-leaks? (it's similar to Youtube in some ways shares breaking news in the form of video with the world) The true story right now is that owner Julian Assange supposedly talked to a guy in the army who had access to the hard drive containing the footage of the murder of about 10 innocent civilians by a army attack helicopter flying over Iraq.

Lets say that army guy was YOU! You found the footage on a computer hard drive, wanted to leak it, but was nervous about it. You weren't sure what to do. but your conscious told you that you have to leak it to the world.

So lets say you talked to Julian and you told him that you didn't want to leak it as you were worried about the repercussions. But instead you told Julian that if he checked at 2:15am on a specific hard drive on your base via the internet, that he would find this video of the murder open to download. Like you were hoping to create some anamnimoty or plausable deniability, to protect you against possible future legal ramifications...

So Julian hacked in, that night at 2:15am just like you told him to. He got into the computer you left open and he downloaded it. Then put it on his website for the world to see. The video went viral around the world. It was everywhere!

Next thing you know TPTB track it back to Julian, and then track it back to your army base as the source of the leak. They find out you've been talking to Julian. And that you told him that you weren't gonna leak the video, but that instead you told him that you might accidentally not log off your computer at 2:15am, which in essence and in no uncertain terms, would give him access to it if he hacked in. So in a slight way lets say you had some level of culpability or responsibility for allowing the video to leak out.

So army Jag figure this all out and tell your lawyer that you're facing life in prison. To make matters worse it would be a super max, allowing you only 1 hour a day to leave your cell. Only 1 visit per month for 20 minutes. And nothing else. Essentially if you were locked up you could either go crazy or die there. To make matters worse lets say you heard of similar cases actually going threw where the individual got life in a supermax. Also you worry that as other inmates and guards know who you are, and how you leaked it, that they might seek to harm you when you show up. Part of you worries that if you go in, you might never come out, or you might go crazy locked up in a supermax.

So here's where it gets weird....

So your in bed, it's 1am, your lawyer calls you and wakes you up with urgent news. Tells you that he just heard that unfortunately the Prosecution just pressed charges on you for the leak!!! He says that based on all the evidence there's no way you'd win because you talked to Julian. That they want to make an example out of you!

Also he tells you there could be a chance that they might break down your door in the next hour to arrest you. If not then most likely at 8am the MP's are bound to show up at your door to arrest you. And you won't make bail either.

So based on all this, deep inside you feel like your innocent, that this little innocent idea you had basically blew up in your face now. That you likely could face life in prison. Lets say your single so you don't have anyone that you'd be leaving behind regardless of what you do at this point.

At that moment at 1am your in bed, what would you do? If you don't react quickly your whole life could potentially go down the tube. You might only have under an hour to react and figure out what you're gonna do?

Using all your Rambo training, what would you do and why?

(also ANYONE ELSE who might want to answer is welcome to provide there feedback)

If I were interested in putting together a disaster survival kit for a family of 6, where would a good place be to start? I am at the earliest stages at planning.

Thanks, GNO
