Internet companies and civil liberties groups were alarmed this spring when a U.S. Senate bill proposed handing the White House the power to disconnect private-sector computers from the Internet.

The privacy implications of sweeping changes implemented before the legal review is finished worry Lee Tien, a senior staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation in San Francisco. "As soon as you're saying that the federal government is going to be exercising this kind of power over private networks, it's going to be a really big issue," he says.

This is yet another picture of the puzzle. Government take over of industry, yesterday's report of how children will be used to collect census information from their parents. Now a very vague proposal which would allow the government to take over private networks, those at least for which they deem "critical". No method outlined which would detail how that critical determination will be made.

We all know that most of commerce and communication today is carried out on-line. This is ultimately a massive intrusion on our privacy, freedom of association, right to free speach and and a number of other basic freedoms.

Folks really need to take a step back and consider the totality of what this administration is attempting to put into place. When you remove the emotion and consider the facts, it is a troubling scenario.
