Congo death: Cell-mate under suspicion

The Congolese authorities suspect that cell-mate Joshua French may have had something to do with the death of Norwegian prisoner Tjostolv Moland in a Kinshasa jail on Sunday.

Molands mother has spoken to French after Moland's death, and she says she don't believe for a second that he killed her son. Another prisoner has told French that he heard some guards discuss that they were going to put the blame on French.

Norway police back Congo autopsy result

27 Aug 2013

Norwegian police have backed the conclusions of the autopsy of dead Norwegian prisoner Tjostolv Moland, carried out in the Democratic Republic of Congo over the weekend.

"They agree on what the cause of death is," Per Zimmer, a lawyer for the Norwegian Criminal Investigation Service told NTB. "I can not comment on what has come to light in the interests of the further investigations, and particularly the families."

On Monday evening, Norwegian authorities were still refusing to comment on what conclusion the Congolese investigators had come to, or on whether Moland's death was being treated as murder.

Congo's deputy foreign minister Tunda Wa Kasende speculated on Sunday that French had strangled Moland.

Joshua French is no longer a suspect.

Congo: Prisoner took his own life

The autopsy report on Tjolstolv Moland's death was presented Wednesday afternoon. Earlier in the day Congo Police informed Joshua French that he is no longer a suspect in the case, and that all evidence points to Moland taking his own life.

"There are still a few tests that haven't been fully examined. Unless any new information is revealed, everything so far suggests that Moland killed himself," says the leader of the investigation, Tim Mukutu at a press conference Wednesday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Norwegian authorities still work to reach a diplomatic agreement with Congo so that Joshua French can be transferred back to Norway, to serve his sentence here, French's lawyer Marius Graasvold says.
