S.D. National Guard leader: Pentagon Control Of Local Troops Would Create Chaos

www.rapidcityjournal.com

The state’s adjutant general of the South Dakota National Guard and Gov. Mike Rounds are among state leaders opposed to a Pentagon proposal involving control of how part-time military troops are used in any state.

At the heart of the disagreement is who will command troops when they are sent to a particular state to deal with a hurricane, wildfire or other disaster....

The governors see the Pentagon move as a strike at state sovereignty. Rounds agrees with the ...Governors ...Opposition.

Joining the States Governors in opposition to the Pentagon, The National Gaurd leaders are voicing even more resistance!

Moving to strike soveriegnty from the states, The Pentagon is seeking power to allow the military to delpoy in the United States with out the independent control of the Governors.

"When we're dealing with natural disasters, we've got a response system in place that works," Rounds said in an e-mail statement. "Sometimes you need more forces, such as reservists, as part of the existing structure to respond to emergencies. We do not want a separate Pentagon chain of command that would complicate response efforts."

In another news source, Governor Douglas voices his comcerns:

Governor Jim Douglas says the Defense Department is trying to usurp the power of governors across the country in times of domestic emergencies....

....The worst possible thing for the American people would be to have chaos and confusion during a terrorist attack or a natural disaster of some kind I think the system we have in place works quite well now and ought not to be changed by a power grab by the Pentagon."
