It is you who allows politicians like T.K. to remain in office for 50 years and it is you who are destroying our nation with your "sympathy" for our representatives. Get real, people, he didn't care about you any more than he cared about our once-great nation.

Umm, I think you must be a very young person.

Hate to break this to you, but denying the presidency to somebody who has committed reckless homicide is not the punishment for that crime. The punishment for reckless homicide varies, but Ted should have stood trial for the reckless homicide of Mary Jo Kopechne, and he should have gone to prison for it, if convicted.

However, the real evil of Teddy's action was that he not only left Mary Jo to suffocate in a tiny air pocket in the backseat of his car at the bottom of that cold, black pond, but that he waited several hours and first made a number of phone calls to his political "fixers" before the police were ever summoned.

See, Teddy was more concerned with saving his political career than he was with saving the life of an innocent woman. This constitutes evil.

Oh, poor, poor Teddy! He "paid dearly" for the life of Mary Jo Kopechne, didn't he?

I think we need to ask that question of the Kopechne family. I wonder for whom they are grieving this morning?

Ok folks, Senator Kennedy has passed, he has always stirred strong emotions from those who loved and those who hated him.

My suggestion is to stick to the topic, expect some shocking posts, this has happened before when a public figure has passed.

Don't stoop to personal attacks should someone's post hits you the wrong way, if you think it breaches the T&C's, hit the alert and let the staff check it out.

Try and keep the emotions in check..

Where was all this concern for the poor girl he left to die in the night he was drunk and drove off the bridge????

Um, I didn't start this thread.

Dead or alive or dying...if I see a political figure, such as Ted Kennedy, doing wrong, I will say something. Thats my right. I still say the man was ONE of the problem figures at the root of this screwed up Government. He was one of the "old dogs" in DC. The more "old dogs" that are no longer in power, the better. Yes, he was human, and in that respect, I offer(ed) sympathy towards his family. I haven't attacked or bash his family or family life....just his messed up train of thoughts regarding his political career. Period.

Thats my final thought on the matter.

Well, FF, I was hoping that it would evolve into a discussion on the power shift in DC, his possible successors, the effect on pending legislation, etc.

But I've been around ATS for awhile. I have witnessed, in shock and disbelief, the animus and hatred spewed in the thread announcements of other public figures, such as Tony Snow. The absolute worst, imo, was the thread on Ronald Reagan's passing. I never realized there was that much hatred here.

So while I hoped it would evolve one way, unfortunately I should have known better.

I honestly don't see how anyone can defend this man or his brothers. They totally destroyed the country! I can't even walk down the street now, without being afraid. There is so much crime everywhere!

He still has a family too you know. It's not really about Ted, it's about the Kennedy family. While I agree his action was despicable, any death is tragic.

Here is my two cents:

Ted Kennedy, indeed the whole Kennedy family is a story of a blessing for a nation and a tragedy for the family. All three brothers pushed heavily for civil rights, without any of them, especially Ted Kennedy, there would be a lot more racism and segregation today. Before you judge that the man is going to hell, remember the voting rights act, which helped African-Americans finally be able to practice their right to vote. Remember how good that was.

Also remember how he helped pass legislation to spread health care, from CHIP to earlier health care to education reform. He made a horrible decision in that accident, but he also recieved a concussion from the event. I would not expect a man with a concussion to act responsibly or intelligently.

So yes, there was good, and there was bad, and loving him too much and putting him on a pedastal is wrong, but hating him is just as bad.

Thank God! The wicked witch is dead! One of those directly responsible for the corruption of this government and the overthrow of the constitution is gone, finally! There should be dancing in the street, if you want to talk about change of political power structures, I've got a news flash for you there won't be. They'll appoint some political tool who'll go along with whatever the PTB want and continue the destruction of this country willy nilly. But at least that old codger is finally gone.

The guy was slime and a criminal, though I feel bad for his family, and dying the way he did was painful and horrible, it's better for everyone that he's dead.

I won't mince words. Good riddance, I say. I never cared for the man or his family. JFK was the only bright spot among them and he was taken away for actually trying to do the right thing. Ted was just another liberal trying to push absolute government control on the masses.
