I have been having problems with my eye, so I called my HMO to set up an appointment. I also need to renew my driver's licence, so shortly after I got off the phone with my HMO I made an appointment with the DMV.

The earliest the HMO could squeeze me in is Friday at 1:30 p.m. The DMV could squeeze me in Thursday at 9:00 a.m.

why would you have make an appointment to get your driver's license renewed?

To tell you the truth, my new insurance company seems OK, but my last one made the California DMV look like a model of efficiency and fine customer service

I haven't found in general that corporate bureaucrats are really any better to deal with than government bureaucrats - often less so.

The DMV allows you to make appointments so you can get in and out without having to wait in line. It's just like healthcare actually. I could see a doctor today by going to an emergency room and waiting several hours, or I can make an appointment with a doctor and hopefully get in and get out without having to wait in line.
