You'd be surprised to see that some American tourists actually are guilty of this on the other side as well. If you go to some tourist hotspots in Mexico, you'll see that a lot of restaurant, hotel employees, etc. are bilingual and will speak to you in English and just like in some areas of employment here, where it's favorable that you are bilingual, the same applies over there.
