As the fires raged for a third day, a state of emergency was declared in greater Athens and low-flying planes could be seen dropping water on burning houses. "The situation is tragic. Fires are out of control on many fronts," local governor Yiannis Sgouros said.

Is Greece prone to wildfires due to the geography/environment? All it takes is one flicked cigarette into a patch of scrub as we saw here on Long Island with the LI Central Pine Barrens "Sunrise Wildfire" in 1995 ... we needed fire trucks from as far away as New York City, Westchester and Rockland counties, and New Jersey before they could put out the fire.

it's very dry and most of the trees are pine trees which catch fire easily in the dry hot weather
recipe for disaster
