Veteran Steelers receiver Hines Ward said Thursday he believes prison-bound former teammate Plaxico Burress, 32, will probably never play again in the NFL.
"Who knows? Maybe he comes back and gets another chance," Ward said. "Right now, it's not going to happen that way."
Burress, who played with the Steelers from 2000-2004, pleaded guilty Thursday to a weapons charge and agreed to a two-year sentence for accidentally shooting himself in the right thigh at a Manhattan nightclub in November of 2008. The gun was not licensed in New York or in New Jersey, where Burress lived, prosecutors said.
Facing the prospect of spending at least 3 1/2 years behind bars if convicted at trial, Burress -- who has a wife and 2-year-old son - accepted the plea bargain yesterday that also includes two years of supervised release.
I feel for his family. They will now be without a husband, father and breadwinner for at least 20 months until Burress becomes eligible for parole.*
