Britons Unite To Defend Their National Health Service

Britons love to mock their National Health Service — just don't let anyone else poke fun at it.

They particularly resent the British universal health care system being used as a punching bag in the battle against President Barack Obama's proposed reforms.

Conservatives in the United States have relied on horror stories from Britain's system to warn Americans that Obama is trying to impose a socialized health care system that would give the government too much power.

I don't know what to believe anymore lol.

I know there are two sides to every story, but I can't decide if there are more people who hate a national health care system than like one.

I love the idea of walking out of the hospital, never having to worry about a bill but it seems I'd be worrying they didn't leave a sponge in me instead lol.

So, British and Canadians, overall, do more of your citizens seem to like the health care or have horror stories about it?

I love the NHS, for all it's faults, I wouldn't be here without it.

Supra Ventricular Tachrychardia diagnosed. (Though being treated privately since I can get free private healthcare through my dads work.)

Varicosile (Something similar to that) Diagnosed. (Treated privately again.)

Went in there almost dead last weekend because I'd had too much alcohol, which messed with my heart medication and almost stopped it, AND I had hypothermia.


Those are only the serious ones, the NHS has treated me for MANY MANY more less serious problems. Sure it's not perfect, but I'm meant to be having a major operation on Wednesday next week and they can't even tell me if they can do it until this friday. And thats private...so they arn't perfect either.

I couldn't afford to have to pay for healthcare, I'm simply using it far to much and we just don't have the money.

People think its a great service. Clearly the author of that article doesn't understand the psyche of the British people!

We mock EVERYTHING but that doesn't mean we hate or dislike it.

Horror stories are always going to be more popular when it comes to chatting around the water cooler at work. I'm from the UK and I've always been happy with the NHS, admittedly it could be better but then I don't know of an institution that hasn't made some mistakes.

In the news a while back there were reports of the NHS not giving out prescriptions for certain medications which extend the lives of those suffering from certain serious terminal diseases because the cost to benefit ratio wasn't good enough thereby placing a price on life. This caused quite an outcry but then the NHS hasn't an unlimited fund so they have to balance out the cost to benefit ratio, I'd rather they spent money on medication that will offer the most benefit than the least but it's a touchy subject. I don't imagine this would be much different in the states as currently you have to go private in the UK for these medications.

Its never the NHS that we mock, its how the government handle and fund the NHS. They've messed it up by not paying the nurses enough, so many are goin into private care to get more pay. Less staff = more waiting time = clogging up of the system = mistakes.

The NHS are trying their best with the little that they have.

Its not the NHS, its the handling of the NHS.

Being part Brit I know something of the NHS in The UK.

If it's sooo goood then why are there private doctors?

IIRC, Canada does not allow private Docs, but then, why do some Canadians need to come down to the US for treatment???

I could tell you stories of the pain & suffering of my older, now dead, relatives had to endure at the hands of the NHS, but you've heard similar stories already.

There's no problem with the NHS, its a great service, without it Stephen Hawking might have died from his motor neuron disease.

The only bad thing is that the staff are overworked and underpaid due to MP's stealing the money to buy second homes, £1600 duck houses and porno's.

With all the partisan madness going on with health care things are getting distorted and turning into a quagmire.

This is what happens when politics interferes where it shouldn't.

This is just something I copied and pasted from another thread (I wrote it) as I feel it applies here and the other thread didn't get much comments.

Whats the deal with with everyone ranting on about the NHS?

Over the 29 years i've lived on this rock i have had one of my testes untwisted and stiched back into place after recieving a nather nasty kick to them, years later a sack of fluid removed from around it that had develolped, my tonsils and adenoids removed, I have had MRI to check my pituruy gland, had a nasty hot oil related burn taken care of, had a 4 inch nail removed from my arm, had exploded test tube removed from my foot after a failed chemistry experiment and injuries from a car crash taken care of. I have had countless medicines and vaccines for various ailments and illnesses. My grandfather had chemotherapy for cancer, my mum has just had her shoulder corrected, my dad has had similiar to his elbow. There is lots more I could mention, but i wont.

How much has all this cost under the NHS, 100 quid? 1000 quid? 10,000 quid?? nope its cost absolutley bugger all, on some cases they have even re-imbursed travel expenses. The NHS is a wonderful system and should be praised. (and i'm not biased because my mum is a nurse in the NHS, lol)

I did a search...found this thread...and thought I would resurrect it as it were.
The NHS is about to be sold off next year...it is a quagmire of nepotism and looking after the old school boy network.

However I just wanted to post this....

Banner on Suspension Bridge: do not destroy NHS


A banner has appeared on Clifton suspension Bridge containing a warning to politicians not to 'destroy' the National Health Service.

There are reports that the banner was hung by Bristol-based campaign group Protect Our NHS - who posted a picture of it on Twitter.

15 years ago I predicted that there would be a resurgence in complimentary health care.....looks like it will be coming... but I never dreamt it would be at the expense of the NHS

3 brain surgeries, 4 courses of chemotherapy 1 course of radiotherapy 4,months of rehab for a stroke over 10 years free prescriptions and close monitoring of brain tumour as many mri scans as I require, support groups, 8 week mindfulness course, psychologists, physio therapists occupational therapists. All within the past 10 years. Another brain surgery planned for January followed by more chemotherapy. All on nhs. I can't complain. In fact I've no complaints. I've always been treated with so much care and respect. In fact like many brits I was born in an nhs hospital too, but no paper is going to report my story, not when scare stories generate more sales, I'm not going to enter into a debate. My personal experience is all the evidence I need, but I'll let the free market obsessives have their say. The ones who know the cost of everything and the value in nothing

I know I'll be doing what I can to get the message across to as many folk as I can with what is happening to our NHS next year....it has to be stopped!!!!!!!!!!!!
