What is going on with all the mag 6 earthquakes recently?

There have been 6 earthquakes in the last 7 days (so far) of magnitude 6 or greater.

This seems to be leading up to something..... maybe an 8.0 or greater is on the way.

I agree, there is some shifting in the plates around that side of the pacific rim...
there have been a string of them.

Well, it's that whole plate-tectonics thing.

Unfortunately, us here in North and South America don't move quite as fast as everone else in the world (witness UMTS and other mobile technologies), so the rotation of the Earth is causing Europe, Asia, Austrialia et. al to slowly overtake us.

That means that in the not too distant future, when the US outsources jobs to Indonesia, India, the Phillippines, etc., there won't be so much of a time difference. Unfortunately, we have to shake up the world to do that.

So this is not normal?

I've been wondering about that. About 2 weeks ago I added the firefox Equake alert. I had no idea there were so many big quakes around the world so often.

It is not at all uncommon.

March 3-9, 1974: 6 mag 6.0+
March 7-15, 1974: 7 mag 6.0+
June 22-27, 1974: 6 mag 6.0+
October 7-12, 1974: 8 mag 6.0+
