Is The Moon Off Limits

www.miamiherald.com

A soon to be released NASA report is said to place the moon off limits for manned visits for another 20 years. It's already been 40 years since the last manned moon shot.

Was it something I had for dinner, but this article just wouldnt go down smooth when I read it. I never thought I'fd be saying this but is there a message "in plain sight" that the moon is off limits, for some reason that is not adding up? Mighty strange, imho. I might even venture to ask just what is the story here? Comments/ Additional information from members?

The Human Space Flight Plans Committee, appointed by President Barack Obama....

It won't push a socialist agenda so his appointed commitee doesn't see a need.

Science will be returned to its' rightful place...... Serving the needs of the political agenda.

I think the moon should be opened to the private sector. It's obvious that the government can't do as good as a job as private sector can. From a non-conspiracy standpoint- they can't even go to the moon within 20 more years? If you opened up the moon to commercial ventures I think it would be a whole lot more profitable to everyone and we would have our space colonies by now. Evil governments trying to make space their own. Blast them.

What's the point of bombing the moon to "test the chemical composition of the soil" if they don't plan on putting a single human on the moon for at least 20 more years?

Whatever happened to that bombing anyways?

I feel that it's getting to a point that a company will simply ignore the government and go there for something. Or another nation's business.

If the US feels the need to isolate itself from the glory of accomplishments off world, then I must respectfully tell the administration to f*ck off, and that my plans of writing and creating short stories and books will be done to make sure the youth love space and force the government to do something.

WTF? How weird.

They must be HIDING something there! Maybe the Atlantean moon missions.

We've already spent 9 trillion dollars we don't have on bailouts etc, what's another 50 billion over the next 10 years? It's a drop in the bucket, and unlike the bailout, we might actually have something to show for it (like the advancements in technology that spun off from Apollo program).

So the $50 billion shouldn't be a showstopper, but if I were Obama I too would have a committee review the objectives of NASA to see if they make the most sense today. And if they tweak the objectives to some that are more appropriate, that's ok.

I just hope Obama's not using this committee as an excuse to back out of his campaign rhetoric where he said he was pro-space exploration.

I see no sinister plot here.

Our whole moon effort was inspired by our race to outdo the Soviet Union in space. The Soviet Union caught us with our pants down when they sent up Sputnik, a satellite that sent a beep to earth as it made its way around the world. Right-thinking Americans were horrified that an enemy they thought was all backwards and lagging in science, managed to put up a satellite before we could even get started. So began the space race.

The Soviet Union put the first man into space, as well. We had to play some serious catch-up.

President Kennedy inspired the country by announcing an effort to put a man on the moon by (I think) 1969. After his assassination, the program continued. I think no politician dared suggest stopping that program, for fear it would seem disrespectful to our departed president. In any case, the Soviets were not far behind.

Now there's not such a great pressure to visit the moon. The Soviet Union is gone. We accomplished our goal, visited the moon six times. We've got plenty of problems right here on earth to keep us occupied for the time being, not the least of which is a huge financial crunch. I doubt many politicians are willing to bet their careers on the US public supporting spending many billions of dollars to revisit the moon. I think people are more concerned with jobs, food, medical care, and housing right now.

So basically I think the reluctance to go to the moon has much to do with money, and very little to do with any sort of "off limits".

It's going to cost us more than just money. It's going to cost us our own expertise. Our own knowledge of how to do the things that we done in the past.

He's killing almost every technological thing the Govt is involved in that is actually useful.

Missile Defense
F22
Space
Nuclear weapons

We're not going to know how to do anything if this trend isn't reversed.

I think the moon should be opened to the private sector

There is a law that prevents them?

It's obvious that the government can't do as good as a job as private sector can

I wish private enterprises the best for manned space flight - however at this point in time they have not even put a single person into orbit. SpaceX has only have two successful launches and many failures, and there man-rated rocket has not flown yet, nether has there space craft. It is still many years before any pivate company gets close to what NASA does with technology that NASA developed I might add.

From a non-conspiracy standpoint- they can't even go to the moon within 20 more years?

They could go to the moon relatively quickly if they had the leadership and the funding to do it. Even if this report never came out I think it was obvious man would not return to the moon before 2020. They need actual CHANGE for this to happen.

If you opened up the moon to commercial ventures I think it would be a whole lot more profitable to everyone and we would have our space colonies by now.

Much of the technology that will be commercial enterprises into space is and was developed by NASA. If NASA cannot develop a way to go to the moon and then return to it, nobody will for a very long time.

Missile Defense
F22
Space
Nuclear weapons

The F-22 was never killed by Obama. It just was not continued by Obama, the total of 183 aircraft they will get in total has stood for many years.

Whatever happened to that bombing anyways?

They never bombed the moon, they are going to smash an empty rocket booster into it.

en.wikipedia.org...

By finding out the composition of the moon, NASA and others can then develop technologies to essentially mine the moon. For a basic example, if frozen ice is found we then don't have to bring water with us when or if we ever establish a base up there.
