The words "American contractor" are very misleading.
This guy was an adventurer. He decided to go to Iraq without any backing and decided to freelance and look for work.

He was probably picked up and questioned as his situation was so unusual. Nearly every Westerner who is in Iraq is there working under contact and has been flown in with a company. The Lindh case would probably have influenced any decision to detain him.

It is very questionable as to wether Berg was actually looking to leave Iraq. From what I can gather, he was not immediately picked up by extremists and he had plenty of time to vacate the country if he so desired. His previous actions seem to point to his staying in Iraq as part of his adventure though.

As a freelancer, he would not have been entitled to any security from Western forces and therefore would have been at higher risk of being captured by extremists.

With the situation in Iraq being what it is, it has been plainly clear that Iraq is not a tourist spot. This guy thought that it was and he unfortunately paid the price.

The Mercs who were burned & dragged......the buring portion is suspect, because there vehicle was blown up - likely burning their dead bodies. The actions were taken on corpses, not a gruesome death by those action but corpses.
Just as I have spoken to people that think we're in Iraq because Iraq was behind 9/11, I've spoken to those that think the mercs were killed via those actions.

All the photos being distributed on Berg: this was a corn-fed fella, thick of shoulder & waist. If the timeline is to be believed, he seems to be a good 70lbs lighter & atrophy has taken his musculature.

How hard would it be for our intelligence community to find the proprietor of the website where the video was shown, use their powers of 'persuasion', and find out who these cracks are?

No way the owner of the extremist website has no idea where the video came from. He/she may not know the killers personally, but maybe a friend, of a friend, of a friend of the killers. Radicals are all linked in one way or another.

Hope we find them.

The young American who was shown being decapitated on a videotape posted by an al-Qaida-linked Web site was never under U.S. custody despite claims from his family, coalition spokesman Dan Senor said Wednesday.

Senor told reporters that Berg, 26, from West Chester, Pa., was detained by Iraqi police in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul. The Iraqis informed the Americans, and the FBI met with Berg three times to determine what he was doing in Iraq.

Senor said that to his knowledge, "he (Berg) was at no time under the jurisdiction or detention of coalition forces."

However, calls by The Associated Press to police in Mosul failed to find anyone who could confirm Berg was held there or why.

The U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority controls Iraqi police and military.

My sincere condolences to the family. I can't imagine how much worse it must be when you know anyone with an internet connection can watch. I will not be watching it.

I'm glad it's not just me that seen a few weird points to the story.

Given the 'pass the buck deal', that's happening within the 'coalition of the willing', NOW i would guess very hard.!

I smell foul play!

Nick Berg was detained by Iraqi police and later questioned by the FBI?! His parents filed a suit in federal court, claiming their son was illegally being held by US forces. He was released the very next day (after 13 days of being held by US forces), and he says he was not mistreated. Is that the last time his family heard from him?

Michael Berg, Nick's father, had a little to say about the Bush Administration:

"I think a lot of people are fed up with the lack of civil rights this thing has caused," he said. "I don't think this administration is committed to democracy."

I got to talking today with an Iraqi in my German class that's been here about two years about the video. He says that the translation on most of the sites are what the man is saying. But he says that the man speakings voice is not of a native Iraqi, or as he says an native Arabic speaking person at all. He couldnt place the accent at all. At first I wondered how would he know the difference, but he said he's moved around a lot through Greece, Germany, and Jordan (real nice guy). He also pointed out that the man reading almost appeared like he was having a hard time even reading what was written, as if it was badly rehearsed.

Bangin, nice find.
I would think that the 'chain of events' starting with his arrest by I.P.
would find him in camp x-ray faster than he could say, Cuba.
This story does not add up.

My thoughts are with the Berg Family.

I couldn't agree with you more. Nobody is admitting to detaining him. The hotel doesn't remember him. And the video making the claim that that Al Queda's #2 man did the killing himself? That orange jumpsuit. And why isn't the US taking an active role in investigating this? I also find it interesting that support for war fell below 50% this week. I wonder how much those poll numbers will change now?

This whole thinks stinks.

If the killer was speaking Arabic with a hard-to-place accent, this opens up another can of worms. I know when I speak German, my american accent comes out, so people know that I'm either American or British. When someone from Russia, or Poland or France speaks German, you can tell the difference.

I wonder if it's the same in Arabic? Can a person determine the origins of the speaker, just by the pattern of speech( accents, stresses, innovative ways of pronouncing hard to pronounce vowels)?

It would have to be the same. My American comes out in my German all the time. It's nearly impossible to lose the accent. I figure it would have to be the same as Americans can tell the differnece in the accent from someone down south, and someone out west.

I believe they can. There was an interview recently with a member of the Al Aqsa Martyr's Brigade and although he was speaking arabic, there was a familiarity about his voice. He mentioned that he had been educated in the US somewhere in the mid-west. He had maintained that mid-western accent even in his arabic.

After reading this entire thread, I was surpirsed that no one mentioned the articles that are also out mentioning that Mr. Berg was advised to leave Iraq?

I see no 'foul play' to this, nothing but a tragic occurance that is now being downplayed. I didn't see none of the many within this thread 'downplaying' those pictures and images coming out of Abu Ghriab nor the 'timing' of them being released by the media, despite the reports that indicated that those pictures had been around for almost a year or so! huh?

It seems to be a non-native speaking Arabic, from what I've been told by Arabs.
It's the same with any nationality: they all speak the same language, but can tell you from where that person comes.
