Part of the transcript that the al Qaeda read before they beheaded young Berg was a warning to Musharraf:

And another message to traitor Pervez Musharraf then we say to him that we in wait for your meeting with your soldiers

Musharraf has survived several assasination attempts. He has not been our "best friend" in allowing us access to pursue al Qaeda from Afghanistan.

Pakistan has nuclear capability.

What would happen to Pakistan if Musharraf were assasinated tomorrow?

IMO it would destabalize the entire region. We have seen resistance on Musharraf's part only in the interest of self preservation. He is walking a serious tightrope here. He has to satisfy the fundamentalists that make-up the majority of his country, yet keep the US from invading.

Speaking from a strictly "what's in my best interest" point of view, I'd much rather have a dictator in office there, controlling the masses, than a religious zealot with an ax to grind.
