Beware of the Fed's new "Dark Fiber Networks"

A dear friend of mine, who shall remain anonymous, and who also is a local city official, recently warned me of the federal government intentions of setting up what is being called "dark fiber networks".

Apparently, local officials from county commissioners, mayors, city managers and the like are being encouraged to support the administration's plan to create government networks that will supply television, internet, and telephone services, exactly like we see being supplied in bundles from companies like Comcast and others.

The plan is to first supply these services to government facilities at reduced rates compared to companies like Comcast. Once the infrastructures are in place the next step will be to offer these services to the public at "reduced rates".

The ultimate goal will be to wipe out the private companies who won't be able to compete with the rates being offered by the government "bundles" and the end result will be that all telecommunications, information, even television will be controlled, filtered, and limited by the government.

I know the integrity of my contact, I appreciate the trust this person has extended to me in giving permission to post information about this. This person has told me they will not support this move by the feds to establish such a network, and has encouraged me to sound the alarm to all who would listen.

I believe the only real action that we can take now is to contact our representatives, and senators and tell them we know what is going on and we don't want the government to step into the area of information and communication like they are in the auto industry, the banking systems, and health care.

Dark fiber is simply a term for fiber optic cable that has not been used as if yet. It is put in to the ground by a lot of different companies. Telecom giants have buried a large portion of what is in the ground. there was a large push about 10 years ago to start putting this fiber in the ground and there was supposed to be "fiber to the curb" by now. Which is a fiber optic connection to each house. Just like in the citys and suburbs there is copper phone lines and copper coax coming to the curb. It is pretty far from a conspiracy as far as I am concerned. If they "they being the telecom folks" would get this fiber all over then it would facilitate hooking companies with multiple locations up with an unlimited bandwidth connection between buildings. In my business, that is the golden ticket. Your connection to the internet is already monitored and there are servers logging everything that comes form you IP. If you look a kiddie porn, they know and they will be stopping by soon. Big brother has been here for a while now. he just stays in the shadows and only show himself when it's time to prosecute. I hope that leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling.

Im aware of what the term means, what is surprising the what the government intends to do with thier new networks. Suppression of information, filtering of what we hear, see, or say.

About ten years ago, my municipality struck an agreement with the cable provider. The telco agreed to help with the cost of a municipal fiber 'ring' and the telco gets to use what we are not using. There are still many. many 'dark' strands of fiber available. It was a death knell for local providers. We only have ONE now of any substance, but the consumer benefited from increased bandwidth. The prices suck because of the lack of competition.

As part of our agreement, several of our city buildings are connected via this ring and we can tap in to it with new buildings as we need to.

If there IS a conspiracy here, it's the proliferation of the telco involved and the elimination of competition.

That is exactly the concern here, the elemination of the private sector providers, once they are gone...the feds control all exchange of information and communication.

But they "feds" already monitor the flow of information. If we the people don't find a way to limit the governments power or quest for power, having them control what your watch will be the least of your problems. I wouldn't worry about this until Obama names the "information czar". I just don't think this is a real concern at this time. We have to make sure the boat doesn't sink before we worry about where to park it.

I agree with Network dude and must add that, for a moment think about the tech.

When people were using radios for entertainment, the gov had television shortly after they had color while people eventually had black and white.

The government tech is always more advanced by approx 40 years. I know, you heard other wise or know different. I do know, and so do my navy and airforce buddies.

Granted the majority of the distributed stuff is not always the greatest, the best is. This isn't about that, it is about the fact they have controlled everything.

Media of every form, from dot n dash to the radio and tv, followed by internet. Is all controlled, the government had internet way before the public did thanks to ARPA before they got the Defense added.


So when all the forms of media are controlled, radio, televison and internet via propaganda proxies, who do you trust?

Trust no one, more than your self.
Not saying to not trust any one, just make sure to remember what I said.

You and I agree probably on much about this, but how can you not be concerned that Obama wont name an information czar at some point? This man appoints them faster than we ever thought he would. In May the Washington Post reported,

"President Obama is expected to announce late this week that he will create a "cyber czar," a senior White House official who will have broad authority to develop strategy to protect the nation's government-run and private computer networks, according to people who have been briefed on the plan."

If this isnt the beginning of an "information czar" I don't know what is.

I'm not very surprised.

We have a province in Canada that does the same thing. The wonderfully flat Saskatchewan.

You can't buy any insurance, phone, cable, internet, virtually any service that isn't owned or partly owned by the provincial government.

It's kind of sad, I have a hard time getting cell phone reception on my carrier when I travel there because I'm no on "their" network.
