The price of raw sugar has increased to its highest level since March 1981, as supply concerns grow.

Raw sugar futures added 3% on Monday, to 21.55 cents a pound.

"The main problem is a deficit in sugar supplies," said Nick Penney, a trader with Sucden Financial, a firm that focuses on sugar trading.

Growing demand in Brazil for sugar to be turned into ethanol, coupled with a sharp fall in Indian production, have both prompted worries, he explained.

Sugar production in India for 2008-09 fell 45% year-on-year, according to a report by Sucden.

And a "drastic fall" is expected for the coming Indian crop, it said.

Watch out for sugar prices to start rising even higher at your local stores! It won't be long before sugar is rationed to the point where you may only buy a certain amount at a time.

Heheh

I love these stories. Beautiful. Engineered shortages (such as 'big consortiums' buying up all the sugar farms in Queensland, Australia, which could have supplied the world with sugar, except the new owners ploughed the cane into the ground and even paid farmers not to produce).

Then we have the 'alarming news' that sugar prices are climbing. And oh dear, there may be shortages. LOL. GOOD! Let there be sugar shortages. The world is waking up to these rackets. And the world has been told now just how BAD for us is sugar. So roll on the shortages so we can have better health, better teeth. How nice of the orchestrators of these scams to wean us off the poison they've been putting into virtually everything they sell us.

Now we need a SALT shortage too.

Then a FAT shortage.

Then another fuel shortage, to help us all walk and get even fitter

They're very kindly turning us into lean, mean, fighting machines

Fat and salt is actually good for you. You really need to rethink your mainstream outlook.

More animals for me to eat, please!
