Once reserved for government jobs or payroll positions that could involve significant sums of money, credit checks are now fast, cheap and used for all manner of work. Employers, often winnowing a big pool of job applicants in days of nearly 10 percent unemployment, view the credit check as a valuable tool for assessing someone’s judgment.

so much for being able to try to dig yourself out of a hole.

I find this practice ridiculous when the jobs don't involve handling money or sensitive jobs in which you could profit by selling secrets and the like.

When the economy is the way it is, you've been unemployed long enough to start having bad things show up on your credit report and you are just trying to turn things around, how the *%#$ are you supposed to get back on your feet with this going on?

This is nothing new.

I know of several companies that do this and have for 10+ years.
