I say one thing: If you think that mainly only good people were leaving Europe because of religious opression, you are wrong. You should know the two countries that contributed most with man-power to the colonizations of NA.
Guess which ones ... England and Germany ... those were the ones that suffered most from religious persecution and partialy the ones whose inhabitants get furious about fanatics from both side of the spectrum ... remebering James I who get rid of the puritans. Drove them away to America. Or atrocities in the course of the 30-year war in Germany (1/3 of the population dead) forced the most biggot ones to leave into the New world because of safety and to begin a new life far from fanatics from the opossite spectrum.
Thanks for reading, this is my contribution to the topic.

I do believe autowrench answered my question. I am not an expert in Muslim practices and beliefs. However you answered your own question. You see the grip that religion has on nudity laws for the contry where that religion dominates.

Why is it not allowed in America to show a womans nipple??
what is so mysterious about this little piece of hardware

Why is it not allowed to show fully naked sexual climax? What is so mysterious about this basic act of biology?

It is arbitrary.

The american social convention draws a line at nipples. The line might have been drawn anywhere. It landed where it did.

There are many men with breasts larger than mine

still laughing out loud!!!!......

Now when it comes to the physical aspect in can not judge wether or not it would be more comfortable to wear a Brassiere. (I could imagine in certain situation it would be handy) but you should be able to feel free to walk around without one any time you feel like it!!!!

Peace

(for the record, I'm all for nudity and sex on the telly so I'm no prude!)

I think in the example you mention, it might be that there would only be two reasons to show a sexual climax on television, in all its glory.

1) Educational / Medical / Informational

2) Entertainment

And the problem there is that the majority of people will see option 1 as a form of option 2!

And I'm guessing (only a guess, no facts) that's why you will never see it on American television - the religious influence over the years as ingrained it into the social conventions that the only reason you *should* see it is down to a sexual nature. And as sex is often demonised by religion, it's viewed as negative or wrong to be shown publicly in that manner.

There's a show over here in the UK called, "21st century sex" or something along those lines. It was on after the watershed, around 11pm. It was definitely educational in it's nature but still had a tongue-in-cheek (no puns intended!) spirit about it at times.

I remember this show specifically because it *did* show a full male climax, albeit using cameras placed inside the woman's body (couldnt be comfortable!). So, cameras showing the act of copulation and the subsequent end result could be argued as educational. Which is was as it was dicussing sexual positions and how they affected each partner, etc.

But seeing that, I thought, wow, that's different.

Well that's pretty [SNIP] of the american social convention than!!!

I totaly agree that nobody should have to be exposed to genitalia swinging around everywere but why was a line drawn at nipples but male nipples were excluded??

What's the difference between a man showing his naked torso and a woman doing the same?? The difference is only in eye of the ones observing it and if this american social convention is prohibiting the display of female nipples than that sugest they are thinking of something other than a naked human torso....

Huh?? I replied to your post because of this line

I believe it all boils down to the age of America. Many countries in Europe are hundreds and even thousands of years older than America.

and my reply was:

Good theory, thanks

But then what's up with muslim countries???

They are pretty ancient cultures, right??

.....

But i do agree religion is the major factor in this ridicilous situation.

Well, that is a good statement coming from a Christian, and I salute you for that. I once got into a deep discussion of what if God came to dinner with a Christian minister, my own brother.
He informed me that he would bathe and dress in his finest suit and tie, with his gold cuff links and all. I said that I would bathe, comb my long hair down, and appear at the table naked, just as I was made, and the only way I would feel comfortable in the presence of the Divine. After I said that, my brother reflected that perhaps I made a good point, that clothing was man's invention, after all. I guess I am happy that sex is still taboo, and I am also happy that 99% of people would have nothing to do with porn. The industry generates billions of dollars each year, and only a few benefit from these profits.

One last thought....a man's naked body is like a truck, or jeep, it is a utility vehicle, while a woman's naked body is a work of art, beauty to behold. It is totally clear to me that a Divine Female created women, for us men have not a clue to women....

What are you talking about, religion is not that popular around here. I am very against religions as most of my friends are. Hell I'm not even confirmed as most of my friends are not either. I believe religion is more popular across the pond than it is here in the U.S. As for the nudity, I don't understand why its so censored over here. If I could I would walk around naked all day, We were born naked, we should be able to live our lives and, die naked too...

PEACE!!!

If nudity was on TV all the time Americans wouldn't have subscribe to Cinemax or buy pornos or get PPV. It's seems more likely a money making decision than anything to do with religion.

It's not about current religion, more the established rules which came from religious belief.

While many of those founding the USA were escaping religious persecution, their religious beliefs were still extreme by today's standards.

I guess it's like Christmas, not many of us follow the rules and teaching based around the religion, but we are still expected to participate socially.
Even as a Pagan I buy Christmas cards for family, friends and colleagues. I give gifts. But I don't follow any religious teachings associated with the Christian religion.

Censorship and our feelings about nudity are more of a social conditioning brought about by religious belief in history than by genuine current views.

If a survey were to be conducted, I can almost guarantee that the majority would state that our current prudish attitudes to nudity (as devised by governments), sexual entertainment and sexual laws by region or nation are completely over the top and do not reflect the views of the people.

Interestingly, I dont know a single religious book that recommends suppressing nudity or sexuality. So one has to ask oneself where religions picked this strange idea up...

Not all Americans fallow this so called censorship.
most of it is just because of the religious right.

You want to see the real american view regarding nudity go to any nude beach or google "burning man" images.

In the US there are a 100,000+ laws on nudity federal, state, county, city and you could get arrested and serve a long prison term just by crossing a state, county or city line.

I have a large photo collection from my years going to nude beaches.
in Calif all the photos are 100% legal.
In about 12 states i could be arrested just because i had at one time had them on my computer hard drive and deleated them before i entered one of these states.

In some states a parent can get arrested for photos of there own kids in the bath tub and with the gentiles hidden by the water.

And i understand the laws in Australia are a lot worse then the US.
en.wikipedia.org...
en.wikipedia.org...

then again someone will always complain about something nude.

I live in the USA.

In my state, it is legal to go topless.

The only law regarding nudity is that the genitalia may not be shown in public.

Men have to have their package covered.

Women can walk around fully nude, as long as she is not shaved or does not bend over and expose her . . . inner workings

I like my state.

Which state is this?

And more importantly, do women in your state actually practice their rights?

I may move!

Those religious perverts that are responsible for interpreting the bible are the ones associating a woman's nipple with sexuality.....

Only because they make this association women have to be covered up??
You would think that with religions point of view regarding the treatment of young children every little boy has to be covered up aswell...

"filthy little young boys!! Because they look so deliciously innocent we can't help touching them. Cover them up!!!"

If you can make people fearful or guilty, they're much easier to control. Religions make people fearful and guilty, and they make you feel guilty about sex. Play with yourself and spend eternity in a lake of fire while demons use your kidneys as Monopoly figures.

Wilhelm Reich treated people to dismantle their sexual neuroses. He'd joined the Communist Party because they ran free clinics in Vienna. His treatment worked rather too well. His patients, liberated from the sexual repression inherent in early 20th-century Western culture, found political ideology boring and a waste of time. They'd sooner be in a loving relationship and enjoy raising kids.

Funnily enough, the CP turned against Reich and after he left the party, may well have persecuted him throughout his subsequent life.

This relationship between sexual repression and making someone easy to manipulate has been known for thousands of years.

Just because a culture has lots of porn doesn't make it sexually liberated. I've heard (but haven't checked, so if someone proves me wrong on this, good for ya) that the Bible Belt states are the biggest consumers of porn. And of course how many well-known preachers have been caught out failing to observe their own rules? Jim and Tammy Bakker kind of spring to mind. Just looking at them would make any sensible person want to move calmly but firmly in the direction of "away".

Getting all prissy about a wardrobe malfunction when you're involved in the wholesale slaughter of people in Iraq, Afghanistan and other places is a sad lack of moral perspective.

But as, I think, George Carlin said, these are people who read the Bible purely so they can tell other folk what to do.

religions are an easy scape goat, eh.
explain this to me, italy's one of the most religious countries in the world,, even have the pope, and they've no issue with nudity. spain is a terribly catholic country, again, no issue with nudity. holland is a hella puritanical country, no issue with nudity.

i don't buy the religious thing. it's an excuse.

this post by pai mei bought something to mind, i'm going to say it's good, old fashioned, american racism. americans associate nudity with races of a lower order, "savages".

blood and gore doesn't go down well on TV either, shooting someone is okay though because that's more "civilised".

Yeah it's racism alright but not with races of a lower order IMHO but racism against the female gender. I believe no american will object to a man walking around naked as long as his genitals are covered....
