It is the way that the scribes wrote the name of God because they believed that to write the entire word itself is to remove the Holy from what God infers. It's an ancient custom that has trickled down into our modern times.

The vowels are not used because they are the creation sounds..
If you add the o to g_d..you are creating..like adding yeast to bread!!
Hebrew is written without the vowels...
