Fastest growing religion???

People keep quoting this about different religions without any substantiation or qualification. It kinda annoyed me, so I did a search here, and on ATS this is claimed for Islam, Mormonism, and for Wicca (in Australia). Could be more, as I only glanced through the entries.

Why do people bring this up and why do they consider it important? Why don't they ever substantiate it? Is fast growth associated with a conspiracy to take things over, or is it considered a divine sign?
