There was no formal notification that the AFME would be called upon, but by watching events on television, they saw they would be needed. Beginning shortly after September 11, teams of pathologists began examining victims’ remains. Operations were fully underway by September 13. Working largely at Dover Air Force Base (AFB), Dover,
DE, the teams brought together all the armed services to identify their fallen comrades.
“Our staff represented every branch of the service. We also received tremendous support from the doctors, nurses, and technicians stationed at Dover who participated in the investigation.” Due to short staffing at the AFME headquarters, personnel had to be called in from around the country. Military personnel were identified largely through dental and DNA (deoxyribo nucleic acid) records kept on file. Dental, medical, and Xray
examinations were used. Employees at the DNA laboratory worked twelve-hour shifts, seven days a week to support the mission, while pathologists were also working twelve-hour shifts.
The examiners also determined causes of death. There were frequent requests for information from higher headquarters, to the point that the requests interfered with operations. At the same time, higher headquarters were not accustomed to handling information from medical examiners, and sometimes misinterpreted data, which required further efforts from the AFME to explain.
With tremendous public interest in the recovery effort, AFME received a tremendous number of enquiries from the media. Personnel at Dover AFB focused on their work, and interview requests were channeled away from Dover.
While identification information on military personnel is stored and centrally available, information on the 64 civilians on Flight 77 took weeks to arrive. By November 16, 2001, all but five sets of remains had been identified prior to mortuary specialists taking care of them before release to next-of-kin. “Because of the combined effort of all three services and the FBI” the process worked quickly. It was “the most comprehensive forensic investigation in U.S. history.”
Personnel from the AFME supported, including acting as team leader, the identification of remains from United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed in Somerset, PA. All but one of the passengers and crew were identified. Armed Forces DNA Identification Laboratory personnel were crucial in identifying victims.

Since 9/11, videos have been shown that depict Osama bin Laden meeting with some of the hijackers, or the last will and testament of some of the hijackers. In the past Al Qaeda has used couriers to deliver videos to media outlets, such as Al Jazeera. Now, Al Qaeda has the capability to produce high quality videos, through As Sahab, its production house, and deliver videos directly over the internet.
September 2008
On September 19, 2008, As Sahab released a new video which includes approximately ten minutes of footage showing 9/11 hijacker Ahmed al-Ghamdi reciting his last will and testament. Ghamdi was one of the muscle hijackers aboard United Airlines Flight 175.
In all, this video is nearly 1 1/2 hours. There is substantial footage of Ayman al-Zawahiri, Bin Laden's deputy. There also are a few clips of Bin Laden speaking about Palestine, which he says is a "great opportunity for mujahadeen who have been fighting in Iraq," speaking as though Al Qaeda has been doing well in Iraq lately (that is actually not the case, with foreign mujahadeen leaving in large numbers). The video also includes some old clips of Abdullah Azzam, who along with Bin Laden, established the Maktab al-Khidamat (Services Office) in 1984 for supporting the mujahadeen during the Soviet war in Afghanistan.
The video was released several days late, after technical problems with online forums and sites that Al Qaeda uses. This may mean that the organization Al Qaeda had previously with creating and disseminating videos and other material has been disrupted in some way. Adam Gadahn, a U.S. born Al Qaeda operative, has played a key role in the organizations media operations. There are unconfirmed reports that he was killed in a missile strike in North Waziristan, located in Pakistan along the Afghanistan border.

And is so, in order to put this to rest or prove otherwise, can you do a record of death search and match them up with family members and last known addresses, etc.?
This would have to a paper trail.

Now he is protesting his innocence from Casablanca, Morocco. He acknowledges that he attended flight training school at Dayton Beach in the United States, and is indeed the same Waleed Al Shehri to whom the FBI has been referring. But, he says, he left the United States in September last year, became a pilot with Saudi Arabian airlines and is currently on a further training course in Morocco.

Hijack 'suspects' alive and well
Now he is protesting his innocence from Casablanca, Morocco.
He told journalists there that he had nothing to do with the attacks on New York and Washington, and had been in Morocco when they happened. He has contacted both the Saudi and American authorities, according to Saudi press reports.
He acknowledges that he attended flight training school at Daytona Beach in the United States, and is indeed the same Waleed Al Shehri to whom the FBI has been referring.
But, he says, he left the United States in September last year, became a pilot with Saudi Arabian airlines and is currently on a further training course in Morocco.

Don't reply to me. As long as Truthers want to bring up the debunked claim that Olson did NOT talk to her husband, I'll remind them that their claims was debunked in 2002.

At this morning's memorial service for Barbara K. Olson, who died Tuesday when American Airlines flight 77 crashed into the Pentagon, a priest reached into scripture for something familiar – a Bible story.
He did so as he recounted the now-familiar story of the telephone calls Olson, 45, a lawyer and prominent commentator, made to her husband, U.S. Solicitor General Theodore Olson, to tell him her plane had been hijacked. Theodore Olson was powerless to stop events from unfolding.
"We can only imagine what went through Ted's mind when his wife talked to him," said the Rev. Franklyn Martin McAfee, a pastor in Great Falls.

WASHINGTON -- Barbara Olson, a conservative commentator and attorney, alerted her husband, Solicitor General Ted Olson, that the plane she was on was being hijacked Tuesday morning, Ted Olson told CNN.
A short time later the plane crashed into the Pentagon. Barbara Olson is presumed to have died in the crash.
Her husband said she called him twice on a cell phone from American Airlines Flight 77, which was en route from Washington Dulles International Airport to Los Angeles.
Ted Olson told CNN that his wife said all passengers and flight personnel, including the pilots, were herded to the back of the plane by armed hijackers. The only weapons she mentioned were knives and cardboard cutters.
She felt nobody was in charge and asked her husband to tell the pilot what to do.
Ted Olson notified the Justice Department command center immediately.
