The pictures which sparked claims UK soldiers abused Iraqis were staged at a British barracks by Territorial Army (TA) members, it has been reported.
Sources told the Daily Telegraph the photographs were set up in a Bedford MK lorry at Kimberley TA base in Preston.
The regiment accused of the abuse has demanded an apology from the Daily Mirror for publishing the images, but the paper has stood by their
accuracy.
But Mirror editor Piers Morgan quickly countered: "The Daily Mirror does not accept that the MoD has proved these photographs are faked.
The pictures were most likely released to help highlight the abuse in Iraq, where there are four or five cases being actively investigated in British
regiments alone. However, the damage has most likely been done, and the insurgents are probably planning their retaliations... It is completely
counter logical to suppose that they would call off any attack now that the pictures have been proved 'staged'.
The discreditation to the British army and the Coalition has been done, and global opinion will be damaging for years to come.
