Wow I wish I had your Doctor Professor!
My doctor is absolutely a gem, she's an Argentinean Jew via Haite Ashbury who is in her sixties and wears her Birkenstock Sandals to work!
When ever I have to visit her we end up talking about a half an hour to 45 minutes about travel, foreign cultures, ancient cultures, mysticism,
meditation and relaxation techniques and the occult.
Sometimes we even talk about why I came to visit her!
The first time I went to see her as a walk in, I told her my problem (a bad neck and shoulder pain that had been ongoing for months) wanting to get
some muscle relaxants and sleeping pills.
She listened to what I had to say carefully and then wrote out the prescriptions and handed them to and said "Look you shouldn't be taking these,
all they are going to do is mask your symptoms, your problem is you have no love or tenderness in your life and you never relax, you need to get
yourself a girlfriend and stop working 16 hours a day 7 days a week"
I was shocked, I didn't discuss my personal life or work habits with her, but her words sure struck home.
The next day I told my chiropractor what she said he was furious "I would sue her, how dare she say that to you, she doesn't know your background
she's a medical doctor, it's the height of unprofessionalism."
I said wow, I don't know, I think she said it out of intuitive concern and meant well. Which is what I believed.
A month later I had a standing appointment with a specialist in regenerative medicine. The guy had the longest questionnaire I had ever seen. His
lobby was full of people who had flown in from all over the world to get treatment from him. Yet amazingly his nurse ushered me into his private
office right on the minute my appointment was for, and he had already memorized my questionnaire and knew every answer I had put on it.
He said I am going to ask you a series of hypothetical questions answer them immediately without thinking of your response.
I did and he smiled. "As I thought, congratulations you have every characteristic combined of both Type A personalities, you my friend are killing
yourself, you need to stop working 16 hours a day, stop trying to control everything, oh and for Pete’s sake get yourself a girlfriend!"
My jaw almost hit the floor. I said "You know that's what Doctor Schwartz said too!", "Doesn't surprise me he said, she's a good and wise
woman".
He said I am going to give you an MRI, I am going to take more X-rays, I am going to have my physical therapist look at you, and make no mistake your
pain is real, your problem is real, but you don't need surgery, you need to learn to relax.
He had all that done in his labyrinth of offices within 45 minutes and had me sat back down in his office. He asked me to follow him to an alcove in
front of an ornate mirror and said take off your shirt. He said you see how one shoulder is higher than another and your arm keeps twitching? Of
course I did, he said, you are doing that to yourself. Stop it.
Then he took me to another counter wrote out a slip of paper and handed me a bizarre looking thick short plastic cane and said watch how I demonstrate
using this.
That's the same thing your chiropractor does and he is ripping you off not because what he does doesn't work, but because he would have to do it 6
times a day for 3 weeks to unbundle the mass of nerves, blood vessels, and cartilidge you have fused together.
Then he said now normally I would charge 45.00 for this, 280.00 for my consultation, 450.00 for the MRI, 125.00 for the X-Rays but all I want from you
is to stop doing this to yourself now please leave and listen to what I told you, use that cane, and I never want to see you again and smiled.
It took me about 4 more monthly visits to the first doctor to wind my way back to a perfect back and neck and each time I would visit, she would drop
her other patients sit down and take a load of her feet and even though she would always have all 6 of her patient rooms full of someone waiting to
see her, would talk like she hadn't a care in the world about everything under the sun.
I realized she was trying to teach me how she disconnected from the pressure and rigors of her day. She kept saying use your mind, you can overcome it
if you just use your mind, keep trying.
I kept experimenting with relaxation and meditation techniques talking to my own body and finally one night reversed the direction of the spasms using
music and meditation and put an end to them once and for all.
I went back for a last visit to the Doctor and had to ask her because in all my visits she never talked to anyone the way she talked to me, it was
strictly business, and never ever any mention of any kind of alternative medicine, metaphysical or holistic approach, why she took that approach with
me.
She smiled and said, I would love to be able to talk to the rest of my patients like I can talk to you, I can't you see, they don't have your
intelligence or understanding of life and the universe, you truly are a Master and I recognized that in you right away.
She smiled and I smiled but I realized she was telling the truth.
She would get sued for malpractice if she talked to and adviced her average every day patient like that.
She truly believes as a Doctor that everyone has the inherent power to more or less cure themselves. She like the Specialist I went to see truly
believe that people cause their own ailments in life and can correct them.
She like the Specialist I went to see somehow felt it was safe and I would be comfortable and receptive to them sharing their real medical knowledge
versus the spectacle that most of their patients insist on of drugs and therapy and surgery.
I would hate to see Doctors like those two run out of the business because the government took it over. She charged me half of her standard
consultation fee each visit payable in cash, the other Doctor didn't want to take my money at all and even took money out of his own pocket to give
me the tools I needed to heal myself along with the time and the use of his staff and equipment.
I am not sure if it's health care that is broken or human beings to be honest with you Professor.
