All the esoteric knowledge secret societies possess is in public domain and then some. Maybe not every single detail and minutia, but what you learn is that the details themselves don't matter for much at all and all the real "secrets" are in broad daylight everyday, most people just still don't recognize them as such.
Put short, we have egos that are based on self-delusion, and we identify heavily with these egos. Truth hurts and shatters these same egos. So to fully realize profound things like, the universe is really only 1 organism, or that we are all in this together, made of the same stuff, and really no different at all from one another, can be painful stuff. Especially coupled with the way society works, which is all based on greed and hierarchy. Secret societies... are no exception.
