Thanks. I have been tossing Fm around for months and this has defiantly swayed me.
It is often said that Masonry is a system of morality veiled in allegory and illustrated by symbols. And that's exactly why I joined. In the first
degree, for instance, you're presented with a 24 inch ruler and told "The twenty-four-inch gauge is an instrument made use of by operative masons to
measure and lay out their work; but we, as Free and Accepted Masons, are taught to make use of it for the more noble and glorious purpose of dividing
our time. It being divided into twenty-four equal parts, is emblematical of the twenty-four hours of the day which we are taught to divide into three
parts, whereby we find a portion for the service of God and the relief of a distressed worthy brother, a portion for our usual avocations, and a
portion for refreshment and sleep."
Obviously you don't have to literally divide your day into 3 equal parts of 8 hours each, but it does remind you to live a balanced life, don't
spend all of your time at your job' and give back to your community and your family. That resonated with me on a personal level. Maybe it wouldn't
mean the same to you, but one of the other symbols might.
