DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Cargo handler DP World said Thursday business at its ports dropped 10 percent in the first half of 2009 as the shipping industry struggles through its worst slump in memory because of the global recession.

The Dubai-based port operator said it moved the equivalent of 12.3 million 20-foot (6-meter) shipping containers through ports it runs around the world between January and June.

It appears that TPTB plan to bankrupt both Arab oil producers and the U.S. is working.

1. The runup of gas prices in 2007-2008 was followed by a precipitous drop later in 2008.

2. This resulted in a cascading tax-loss effect, still being felt by governments, both national and local.

3. Even Arizona is discussing the selling of the state capitol and other government buildings.

4. California, through bookkeeping tricks and I.O.U.'s has staved off a disaster for a month or two, but will soon again be facing the wolf at the door, and this time the governator will be out of bullets, whether silver or lead.

5. In the meantime, the same U.S. government that wants your health care business, has run out of money for the "cash-for-clunkers" program after only 4 days! The program has been verbally extended for the weekend-but it is only worth the value of the paper it is written on.

6. Stocks are up. But what is driving them up? Have you looked at the volume of business in the exchange? It is miniscule. So how can the equivalent of a high school band be driving up the London Philharmonic? Oh, maybe it's Goldman...

7. To sum it up, your paper (money) is worthless, and soon your banks and mortgages will be all foreign-owned. In the meantime, how will you eat when harvest roles around and the CROPS don't come in, because the farmers haven't planted? (Check out crop reports in each state - at least the ones that have a report.)

Cargo traffic continues to fall at Southern California ports
LOS ANGELES -- Cargo traffic at most of North America's busiest seaports in June crept slightly above the recession-wracked numbers recorded in May — but not at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, the nation's biggest freight complex.
Such a month-to-month decline is unusual at this time of year, port officials said. Ports usually see a pre-holiday increase in trade, in the month of June due to back-to-school products arriving from overseas.

Had to add this article so you could see how down LA is getting, too.
