FSME Introduction

Hello everyone,

I'm Ravenshadow13 and I'd like to introduce myself as the new Forum Subject Matter Expert for the Cryptozoology and Mythical Beasts Discussion Forum!

I will be partnered with the other FSME of this forum, Gemwolf. We hope to encourage relevant discussion and interest in this part of ATS. There are many cryptids which have never been discussed, and many mysteries that we have yet to solve!

If anybody here has a question, comment, or problem about cryptozoology, zoology, the board, or anything else, feel free to contact me! I'm here to help out, make everyone feel comfortable and happy, and provide some extra support for this forum.

I also now have the ability to applaud excellent, research, and correct identification of known species in this forum! I will continue to participate in the threads and add information to them to further discussion.

I joined ATS in March of 2006, and the Cryptozoology and Mythical Beasts forum has been one of my favorites to participate in. In college this coming Fall I will begin my studies in related fields.

Some of my favorite topics in this forum are marine cryptids, prehistoric cryptids, established cryptids (such as the Okapi, Colossal Squid, and Coelacanth), cryptobotany, and identifying known species.

I find cryptozoology so interesting because humans are only one of millions of species on earth, and we discover new species constantly. Life on earth is so diverse, and the more intriguing (think tarsier, axolotl, or mantis shrimp) the better! Right now, conservation is the way to go. If we don't watch ourselves, many of these species could vanish before we even identify them.

If you need anything at all, have any question, need help identifying a creepy bug on your screen window, don't hesitate to let me know! If you'd like ideas on a thread, help on a project, anything, I'm here to help.

Again, congrats....It is great to see someone who truly deserved the title get it. You, Gemwolf, and fooffstarr among others have really helped this forum out. I have only been a member since Dec/07 but remember when this was a highly questionable forum. I hope you continue to provide and now facilitate excellent topics in this forum.

Hello Raven, I dont know if this is an appropriate time to BLOW YOUR MIND !!! ....... but perhaps when searching for mythical creatures in these modern times it is not even neccessary to leave the comfort of your own home.

What am I getting at ?? You can stop searching, and call back the dogs, ... because I, am indeed, a Werewolf. Its true, I eat people all the time.
.... So maybe we can get together some time, and you can study me. I'll buy some Hard Lemonade and Coconut Oil, ..... well make a night out of it ya know.

Ha, I will try (deff. more tempted now especially with you being a FSME) but as you know, I stay pretty busy in the UFO forum. But I always jump over here, even if I don't post.

Intastella- hahaha, sounds like a pretty good plan. If only the real werewolf legend was more like that, we'd have many more sightings.

This thread could not be more out of place. How does this pertiain to anything "Top Secret" or even about the governemnt? I don't even understand what U am readni......mythical animals? I'm not even sure how to react. Is this a real study? If mythical, isnt it a waste of time? Are you speaking of Chimera?

This thread appears in a forum titled "Cryptozoology and Mythical Beasts."

Where does it say anything about top secret or government?

Phenomium- This is kind of a dual board- it has two topics. One is cryptozoology, which is a real study.

Cryptozoology (from Greek κρυπτός, kriptos, "hidden" + zoology; literally, "study of hidden animals") refers to the search for animals which are considered to be legendary or otherwise nonexistent by mainstream biology. This includes looking for living examples of animals which are considered to be extinct, such as dinosaurs; animals whose existence lacks physical support but which appear in myths, legends, or are reported, such as Bigfoot and el Chupacabra;[1] and wild animals dramatically outside of their normal geographic ranges, such as phantom cats.

The other part of the board refers to discussion about mythical beasts. Many historians and anthropologists study mythical beasts! It can range from anything like the historical influence of vampires, or their influence on literature, to accounts of possible sightings.

"Top Secret" is a reference to anything not accepted by a specific population. For example, before the Okapi was properly sighted and identified by scientists, people thought that animal was a joke. Some forums are related to the government on ATS, you're right, but not all of them do. The Cryptozoology and Mythical Beasts forum is in the "Mysterious" forum category, which also includes discussions on the paranormal, religious conspiracy, 2012, and lots more. So, this thread is in the right place. Many people don't consider these topics to be a waste of time, they are actually quite interesting. Look around if you'd like! If you're not interested, not a problem.

And yes, Chimera is a topic which is covered on this board, but it is one of hundreds of possible cryptids that we discuss here.

Congratulations Ravenshadow! Well deserved; I've learned quite a bit from you just in the short time since I came back from hurricane-imposed isolation lol!

Sadly, here in the Cayman Islands, we don't have any spiffy or terrifying-sounding mythological beasties such as chupacabra.

What we DO have is............. now don't laugh........... well, don't laugh TOO long........ We have the dreaded ... May Cow.

Yep, this is part of olde Caymanian lore. Persons who see the May Cow (whether actually in May or not), then either die shortly thereafter, or someone they love dies. It's described as an animal that sounds (to me) exactly like a bull elk with glowing red eyes.

So now you know how I protect my garden. Yep. red L.E.D.s

You live in the Cayman Islands? Are you kidding me?! Anywhere with reefs and things like that has tons of species we don't know about yet!!!! Why do you think I'm getting my SCUBA certification?!!

The May Cow sounds really interesting! I didn't laugh at all, really. But maybe I'm immune to that sort of thing by now? You should make a thread about it! Interview your neighbors! It would be awesome.

@ argentus- yeah that May Cow actually sounds like an interesting bit of folklore! do some digging, you never know what you may find.

Cryptozoology has always been a natural favorite topic of mine for as long as I can remember. As a child, I used to do book reports in school (yes actual BOOK reports, I am getting a little older) on the loch ness monster, bigfoot, and the Jersey Devil (I am from NJ). Everyone else was doing boring topics like American Presidents, cotton, other countries, or whatever, lol.

Unfortunately in those years that's all I really knew about crytpzoology. It's great to learn about about all these other myths and legends as I get older. I went nuts when I first heard about the Chupacabra, I still don't know what to make of it.

The latest legend I have been following are the alleged pterosaur's spotted in Australia. It seems very far fetched but the remote possibility of finding a living dinosaur would be the one of the biggest discoveries of all mankind. I still think our best bet to find them would be under the ocean.
