LOL!!!! (wiping away tears of laughter...)
I am sooooo embarassed for poor Tom, there!
Bet he gets teased mercilessly every time he goes to work!!
Oh, my...funny, funny stuff.
Now, the
geek in me can't resist. One scene there brought back memories of
MY days flying the MD-80. I really hated that
airplane, to tell the truth. But, for the left seat, pay was mid-range (just below our wide-body pay scale) so that helped. Still, too cramped up
front...it is just a glorified DC-9, after all. Stretched, with better avionics and bigger engines.
But the scene? It's the 'wing ice check' requirement. Yup! Those brilliant engineers designed an airplane that, in some atmospheric and
environmental conditions, would form a thin layer of ice on TOP of the wings, when it was refueled. You've probably seen this being done, watching
from the terminal, and wondered about it? Several fixes were attempted, including an electric 'blanket'...not kidding! Not a woolen blanket, of
course...
The thing became so problematic, it was just easier to mandate a wing-ice check before EVERY flight, when fuel had been added. Just to be safe. Had
to be a
physical check, not just visual.
Silly, huh?
