Moon astronauts urge Mars mission

news.bbc.co.uk

Two of the astronauts who took part in the first Moon landing 40 years ago have called for renewed efforts to send a manned mission to Mars.

At a rare public reunion of the Apollo 11 crew, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins said Mars instead of the Moon should be the focus of exploration.

Neil Armstrong, the first man on the Moon, said the race to get to the Moon had been the ultimate peaceful contest.

He said it was an "exceptional national investment" for the US and ex-USSR.

There are many challenges that a manned mission to Mars must overcome. European Space agency is planning a manned mission to Mars. So is US and Russia

Nobody knows how many billion dollars it will cost but it is essential that the financial burden must be shared by other countries

There could be a joint Mars mission with all the space powers coming together - US, Russia, European Space agency, China and India

There is not much that a human will find on Mars though, definitely not aliens !

No matter what the cost, it could have been much cheaper with Robert Zubrin's "Mars Direct" strategy... however, the corrupt inner politics of NASA deemed it undesirable because it financially cut out too many of their back scratchers and kissing cousins.

Instead, they want to make a lunar base that astronauts must depart from... hence all their partners in crime (affiliated businesses and corps) get a piece of the pie... and that's just the start of the extra expenditures. It also pushes any possible Mars mission back decades.

Nice going NASA... you suck!
