Have only got a crappy camera phone, but

no excuses, it has risen slightly now. I guess it's one of the planets, I just freaked out for a moment after seeing something earlier.
It's still there anyway, and I guess it's a planet.

Will see if I can find a website with the positions of such heavenly bodies and report back in a bit - probably with an apology!

its NOT a planet as the planetary axis is South, theres Jupiter which is South but as you say this thing is North then it rules that out.

btw best website for planetary/satellite positions is Heavens-Above.
Free registery and simply enter your location and select "sky chart" from the options list.

Hi, get yourself on over to the Stellarium download page, install it and enter your location. It`s free and gives you all the heavenly bodies in real time at a glance, to compare with what you are seeing. It`s brilliant

its not Mercury as that planet rises with the Sun at 5.40am.

If its East-SouthEast then its Jupiter

Lol well its good to know people are looking out at the skies anyway, and as your looking at Jupiter through the pollutant air tonight just think of the 1/2 sized Earth impact crater which is currently still there after Asteroid/Cometary debris hit the planet just some 12 hours ago.
