To be honest I think the line should be drawn right before stripper poles and things. Just like I would think a Hooters shirt or pasties in an avatar would be a bit much.

But you can't define an expression as sexually offensive or whatever. Just nudity and partial nudity and subject matter.

We all remember my videos. Some people are jerks and think it's cool to make sexual comments about things that aren't sexual.

But some people are dumb and put sexual things of themselves out there on websites like this and get mad when people think less of them intellectually. Not that it's right that people react that way to attractive images.

But if you can't carry on a decent conversation with evidence and facts and charisma on a forum like ATS, you can't expect to cover that lack up with attractive pictures. And people, including myself, probably shouldn't feel insulted when people make lewd comments towards them, because it's the person's own fault for putting their picture up.

But for me, I had a picture of a Raven as my avatar for years. Then I gravitated up.

I actually have a Hooters shirt a friend gave me. I'm wondering, is it still a bit much if one is poorly-endowed enough to make it a sort of sarcastic statement?

(Not to say I disagree with you in general.)

I just think of it as an endorsement of something less-than-savory. Like a pole. Or a sex toy. Or a Playboy bunny. Not ATS appropriate.

But if the Hooters images are edited to be ATS-related, that could be cute. Two UFOs or something.

Now there's an idea! I get your general perspective on that sort of thing though. Just perpetuates what I consider to be wrong-thinking about femininity which we see everywhere else.

A matter of personal philosophy though, rather than forum policy. The guidelines are reasonable and allow people to express themselves how they choose. I'm more offended by the real world, ATS is awesome in comparison.

What is wrong with a pole or a playboy bunny? NOTHING! So if I have a picture of my ankle which has the Playboy Bunny on it that would be offensive to you or considered inappropriate? Why?? I happen to know 2 girls who have been in Playboy and still do work for them and both are very intelligent individuals with degrees and one served in the military and happens to be a very close friend of mine. I was asked to do Playboy when I was 19 for college so does that mean I am an unsavory person? As far as poles I will not go there for personal reasons and I dont want to get banned..lol
Also why would someone need to have their avatar edited for ATS if it wasnt violating T&C? I can see offense in a few avatars on here but I dont care or take it personal, that person obviously feels that way and they have every right to express it in a avatar.
I dont meant to come off rude it's just these are two things I tend to always defend in my life and would like to know why you feel this way.Thanks.

Very simple answer to your question...

They are just Avatars, they aren't sex!

To be disparaging towards someones intellect based on their avatar and yet to ask a flawed question...

Maybe you meant "are they sexually provocative or suggestive"? Is that what you meant? Or did you mean "pornographic"?

www.merriam-webster.com...

Personally - don't know about the intention, but I'm guessing they're not intended to cause sexual arousal or seemingly apply any of the criteria that suggest pornography.

www.merriam-webster.com...

Failing there too.

Conservapedia didn't have a definition for sexual, so I checked pornography on there (as I guess that's the viewpoint you're coming from).

www.conservapedia.com...

Failing there too, but it's closer I guess.

So we're onto the term "innuendo"...

www.merriam-webster.com...

Yeah, I'll give you that (almost)...

So, they might imply sex/sexual thoughts or the like. Well, humans have sexual thoughts and desires (maybe even a lack of or revulsion to), but these avatars you've mentioned seemingly are not graphic or causing graphic thoughts - you may as well be railing against the proliferation of weight-loss adverts on ATS I see, that show women before and after - those after images are pretty racey, women with their midriffs exposed...

If it offends you don't look - now I realise it's not that easy, but maybe "phase out" - do you turn your head for every advert you see that might contain "sexual" material? I do see sexual imagery in things I disagree with and as the adult I am, I realise that it is down to choice and that if I "have" to look at it "advertising" - in public etc, I can just ignore it.

I find this kind of complaint to be terribly petty and worthless - honestly, why start a thread on this when there are far worse issues in the world? How does this hurt the world worse than famine, starvation, pollution, genpcide, rape, torture, obesity, prostition, drugs, corporate-crimes, racism, police brutality???

...and yet you chose to make a thread on this?

Good for you, you must be a great person living on one end of the internet, railing against the injustice of these avatars.

Go Team (jesus)!

Edit to add:

Your avatar seemingly depicts a man with some kind of "exploding head" now I realise that isn't what it really is but the implication is there.

TA, I'm going to put myself out there and be the lone voice of agreement with you. At least I'm in agreement with the point I think you're trying to make.

People no longer understand boundaries. Nothing is sacred. Nothing is private. Respect has become something demanded not earned.

There is a time and a place for everything. Showing up at a costume party in a gorilla suit is funny. Showing up in traffic court to answer for your speeding violation wearing a gorilla suit, while funny, is inappropriate and disrespectful.

ATS is a discussion board for alternative theories and some of those theories are waaaaaayyy out there. Some of the avatars would fit in with some of the subject matter discussed here. Some of them would seem out of place in the political forums. Since people have a variety of interests, it's not possible or feasible or reasonable to insist they pick an avatar that fits only one type of forum.

You're right in that the T&C should apply equally to all avatars and, although I hadn't noticed it before, you're right; they don't.

I don't pay much attention to the avatars myself but some of them are terribly distracting. Some of the blinking ones with no sexual innuendo at all are so annoying that I scroll down past their avatars and wind up just reading half of their post.

I think, TA, that you probably come from my generation where boundaries of appropriateness were tacit. Crossing those boundaries was not so much a matter of "freedom" as it was of showing one's baseness. A lowering of oneself from the elevated station of human (even sexual human) being to that of mere animal.

Animals are consumed with eating, sleeping, procreating. Human beings, who also engage in those activities, do not consume their entire being with constant shows of the basest of their physical existence.

Those of us who believe that displays of a heaving bosom are counterproductive to an intellectual conversation are quickly becoming obsolete, my friend.

I leave you with the words of a man wiser than myself: Be in the world but not OF it.

Aww, it's a shame we can't give stars in this forum.

Lol, I don't care, Ima go find a thread of yours, any thread, and flag and star it! Wahahah.

lol, I went and looked and all you have is BTS threads!

So no stars for joo, but I did flag a thread that deserved one anyway, your Karma and Consequences thread! There, have a flag on me! Good thread!

Anyway, thanks. There is some sanity left in the world. Rare mind you, but lurking in the shadows. Glad you came into the sunlight for a bit.

edit to add: and oh, Jess? DAD???
Lordy, you guys must really think I am a prude... I'm not, just trying to keep the insanity around here with some clothes on. Except you Jess, I didn't post yours now did I?
There's a reason: because you're...you're so...ummm... I just can't spit it out...nvm.

So we are insane for thinking that the avatar of the Terminator gal is horrible? Yeah it's a bit sexy...so what? I gotta say if that distracts you from your intelligent conversation I suggest you put that person on ignore. I have never figured out why skin was so taboo. Like I said if some nipples or genetalia were showing or if two people were having sex in the avatar or if it was some suggestive photo of a child then I would be right there with you. I would raise a flag high and say it was bad but man I think people are way too repressed. Not here on ATS mind you...everywhere. Well I suggest you ignore them honestly and I am not saying that to be rude. I pretty much fully disagree on your point but I will always support your right to have that opinion.

I just find it a bit weird that a picture of some fictional or even real woman on the side being a bit sexy detracts you so much from the great posts around here. Me, I don't have an avvie. I am sure some day I will but I could just care less. They mean little to me and the only reason I watch them is so that I know instantly who I am responding to. So you folks who keep changing your avvie are killing me! :-p

PS...I love Zazz's avvie...she's cuuuute :-p

oops!

True American,

I agree with Whitewave's post as well. It is indeed a type of baseness. That is exactly the word for which I was struggling on page 4 of this thead

www.abovetopsecret.com...

I get so tired of sex and sexuality being foisted off on me in the television and movie format. It tends to distract from the message or social value of the program..if there even is any.

Which reminds me ..I am so glad to see the movie industry begining to promote someone else..besides blondes. They have ruined blondes for me.
Get the picture True Amereican?? Jennifer Connolly is one of my favorite "non blondes."

Although I will admit..I cannot stand that brunnete ...I dont even know her name..the one married to that Biker fellow on television..Jesse James. I dont like his program or her movies. She does mostly such ditzy bubbly roles such that I dont care to watch her on the big screen.

Ok..looked it up..Sandra Bullock is the name. No thanks. I dont care to watch her movies.

A am digressing here..

Well ..perhapsed you get the idea True American. I too get tired of so much sex and sexuality being bombarded in front of me constantly. Even under the guise of being ditsy and bubbly...no thanks.

This is one of the reasons I dont like alot of night life..or Clubbing as it is sometimes called. It can be like a bunch of "Wildlife" hanging out its wares...no different from television and movies.

Whitewave is precisely correct here.

Thanks, Whitewave for those wise words.

I'll stick with becoming obsolete. The world can just beat feet on down the road. I am not impressed with alot of what I come into contact or see out here.

Thanks,
Orangetom
